I'm wondering if anyone can tell me about this. It appears that the tip is missing. The handle is twisted and fits perfectly into hand when held, and is heavy. It's about half inch thick metal.

Looks like it could be an early knife froe . Anyway it's a nice hunk of metal. Most froes had a hole for a wooden handle , but early ones didn't . Just a guess .

Its so corroded that its hard to tell. Must have been underwater? It would almost have to be x-rayed.

Right in the center there should be a hole. It looks like yours is filled with rust. If you do electrolysis it should slowly reveal a hole there. I can't remember what that tool is called offhand, but I have one that's still sharp. It's a mortising axe, but I think it has a special name. It's not a froe. If I remember correctly, it was used in the early days (18th, 19th century) for chopping the square holes in barn beams.

The blades were put at right angles so you didn't have to turn your body 90 degrees to finish the hole. This saved a lot of work and time.
