I noticed this was your very first post - so, Welcome Aboard atruhlicka1! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forum: Select Your Area.... for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country).

I think they are both type 2, I believe I can see the remains of the chain mail on the shoulders. Are there 3 stars under the eagle on the reverse?

In 1925 the date was recessed to make it less prone to wear. Most likely your coins are late 1917 to 1924.

1916- early 1917 would be type 1, without the stars under the eagle.

A Redbook is the coin collectors' book, giving some idea of retail values, according to condition.
It will help you find where mint-marks are, oddities, etc, etc.

Awesome. See all this is so new and not ever been a part of my hobbies. Thanks for being helpful.

A red book will also help you to SELF-GRADE your own coins to give you an idea of what condition grade of your coin. I would call it our encyclopedia to coin collecting.

With the internet I would think everything one could learn from buying a red book could be had for nothing online. Google is everyone's' friend.
