Those are some great finds! I especially love the opel and pearl broach. What is it mounted in? It looks like silver, circa 1920. That's a very commercial piece with a bit of restoration.

Great finds! I would like to hunt near Croton Iowa, I think there would be some cool relics there from a war. I don't know much about it but there is still a canon on the riverbank at a memorial park. The jewelry's not too bad either. ;)

Those are some nice finds...I'm glad to see someone is winning the battle.

Dave,

First of all wonder finds!!! I love the name badge, can you give some more info on how you found this great piece of history? What MD was you using? How deep was it?

I love the ID tag/badge. And large copper always makes my day. :o Great finds.

Fantastic finds. The silver shield and button is very interesting from a historical prospective. That shield belonged to Chaplain James Hill of the 21st Iowa Infantry and he was was a Medal of Honor recipient.

"Rev. James Hill of Cascade, Iowa, organized a company of volunteers in 1862. This company of 97 men were sworn in as Company "I" of the 21st Iowa Infantry. During the battle of Champion's Hill in May of 1863 that Lt. Hill unexpectedly came upon three Confederate pickets and, by quick thinking, deceived the sentries that he was heading up a body of men concealed behind him by motioning them to come forward and compelling the pickets to drop their weapons. He thus avoided capture and, instead, captured the rebel sentries and escorted them back to headquarters. He was later awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions that day. After Vicksburg, Lt. Hill was unanimously elected Chaplain of the 21st Iowa by the men of his Company"

What you have is a great piece of history from an individual who was highly decorated and respected by his unit. "81 soldiers in the 21st Iowa Regiment died of wounds during the Civil War. Twice as many, 169, died of disease. During the Vicksburg campaign, the 2nd Brigade of Carr's Division (21st, 22nd, 23rd Iowa & 11th Wisconsin Regiments) distinguished themselves by driving the Confederates from their entrenchments at Black River Bridge, opening an unimpeded route for Grant's army to envelope Vicksburg." The 21st fought in Mississippi (Battle of Vicksburg)and Alabama (Battle of Mobile)
