Only had 2 hours of light to continue the hunt. (4 man hours).

Finally the systematic approach paid off, we have covered many acres & still have plenty to do, but a least we now have a Very Rare find;

(my best guess, as I have seen none similar)
Iron Age (Celtic) bronze mount of a Boar Head. Broken from a larger piece which I guess had two heads (in mirror image). The boar was a extremely popular Celtic icon, coming second only to the horse. Several Celtic coins have the boar, but this type of mount I have never seen. Could be a bucket mount?? Needs museum input to get to the bottom of this one. cica 100BC-50AD :o

Also a very damaged hammered penny of Elizabeth I 1580s
Livery button
Bag Seal
Possibly a Iron Age Spindal Whorl as its smaller than normal, very basic & very black.
and bits.....

I understand what you mean but this is our first decent find from this field which has been one of our least productive ::)

Makes it all worth it though

Nice finds! Sure looks like a spindle whorl. I don't know about the boars head, looks like a cow head to me but does look old. I found some old American clad, 1967 and and old Euro coin today, 2002, LOL. HH, Mike

That's a fender ornament for a hog/Harley. :D

Nice finds.

I've said it before "you find the coolest stuff"

Wow! A celtic relic AND a hammered! I'm happy for you, Crusader--and I'm REALLY glad that your persistence with that field finally paid off.

Well done!

Definately a boar, as it has a tusk poking from its mouth. It looks better in the hand as its hard to photo.

I think we know that persistence, patience & optimism is the key to finding more finds. My dad on these types of fields get very frustrated when getting very little. Yesterday I said 'we should get hammered out of this area', he thought 'well I not sure.....' It just happened I said it on the same run that the hammered came out & suddenly he's motivated again. I know the systematic approach will pay in the end, if we do a whole field & get nothing of great interest then this is a result too. Cross it off the list, its no longer on the mind. On to the next....

I'm going out in 10 minutes, I hope the rain holds off....

Brilliant finds Crusader, it certainly looks as if you have hit on the right approach. Keep searching.

Was it up near the high ground :icon_study:the best fields are allways the quit ones in my experience :tongue3:

I wholeheartedly agree! We do the same thing with the housesites here. Until the site is gridded off and worked out, or until we get a "No" from the property owner, it is impossible to get the site out of my mind. After that, we move on to the next site. Those fields are expansive--and I know that a single hammered coin is like a needle in a haystack. I've dug over 75 pounds of iron out of a site before in order to find a 1905 Nickel--so I completely understand. Keep up the Good Work, Crusader.
