Spent 3 hours (6 man hours) finishing Section 3 which was the upper & middle slope. If the weather is fine at the weekend we can start section 4 (lower slope). Still plenty to do & the grass is growing quick & the clay is drying out :tongue3:

First find went to me a Scrappy Roman coin.

And last find went to me a Hammered only a couple of runs from the end & just off the footpath.

Hammered Silver of;

Charles I
1625-42 (Tower Mint)
Penny

What is unusual is a blundered obverse legend;
Double V in CAROLVVS & retro E in REX??
Not in my specialist book & looks too good for a counterfiet. ???
Maybe a unpublished variant.

Thanks, you made me look at mine now, we have had 15 mostly halfgroats. 3 other pennies & now this one which is the best penny so far ;D I'm now slightly more pleased than I was when I found it :thumbsup:

Still got a hard slog but we are going to finish however bad it is. :tard:

CRUSADER,
Were the large symetrical crosses on those coins used to mark where they should be cut to make change?

On the earlier hammered they were, but by this time they had several denominations of coins including halfpennies.

It was the earlier Penny (when penny's were the main coin) which they cut in half (halfpenny) & quarters to make farthings.

Hammered :headbang:...Over here hammered is :occasion14: :happy2: :drunken_smilie: and has no association with dug coins

I think you have a greater thrill knowing a good solid target can mean a zillion year old coin !!

Kepp those post comin Mr Crusader !!
Congrats

Derek

Thanks everyone, see what day 29 brings ???
