I got permission to hunt on a local Air Force base near where I work. I hit up the old parade grounds, which are mostly used as a park these days. I was dissapointed I did not find much in the way of military items, but I did find a woman's old fashioned 14K wedding band, a few interesting shells, this odd metal die, a few keys, and a mountain of clad.

On a side note, any ideas what might have caused those shells to look like they exploded?

Happy hunting!

I don't know what I was thinking when I thought 30-'06. I didn't pay attention to the quarter for reference. You're right Hasbeen, they're much bigger than 30-'06. I was looking at the case design, trying to see the headstamp dates, and thinking of the springfield rounds we find around my area at the abandoned military base.

What's odd though...some of the rounds we find on the old base are not fired, but the cases are punctured. Not exploded like yours though.

Thank you for your kind words, and the ring does have a cool ribbed edge. For her pleasure, I assume!

HILARIOUS ;D

Nice finds-AWESOME ring-EXCELENT die!

Have fun,

The shells may have been hit by a plow or mower over the years. I have seen some really mangled finds from fields.

well I hate to say this, and kids, DONT TRY THIS AT HOME, but back when I was a young private on guard duty, in a motor pool area, or downrange on a training site, me and a couple other "genuis" privates would pry open 2 or 3 .50cal blanks cartridges, unfuze a training grenade, insert the fuze into one of the opened rounds, pour the powder from the other cartridges into the one with the fuze, melt on C-rations spoon around the fuze, and PRESTO, instead grenade.............They kinda looked like those rounds you have......................................... Believe me, I am a lot smarter these days ;) ;) ;) ;)

When hunting military bases go for all kinda open grassy areas so much down time i spent sitting undeer shade trees or hiding under them while at pt an it starts to rain or doing pt in any little grassy area not taken up by someone else. stepes around barracks where all smokers would gather an quads where unit award ceromoneys would happen.
