I was metal detecting on the beaches of the Banana River, accross from Merritt Island, Florida, when I received a low grade iron signal near the water's edge. Not too far below the sand, I found this spike. It was heavily encrusted with rust, sand, and salt. I would like any information. I'm taking it to the Sebastian Shipwreck Museum today for further clarification. IMG_1300926183378273.jpeg

I would keep it to yourself for a while. Keep going back to see if there's anything else.

Thank you, everyone, for your advice and expertise today. The museum wasn't much help. They told me that it was hand forged and a ship or boat spike. We already knew that, didn't we?

JFYI...
Hand wrought "spikes"/"nails"... were fazed out by the "cut" nail... which in turn was fazed out by the "wire" nail... which is machine made.

The first one... has been around for EONS...
Since Biblical times.

I believe "Sutphin"...."Hit the Nail on the Head"!

It appears to be a 17th Century Rose Head Spike.
Invented in Glasgow Scotland but duplicated through out the Old World.
Could have been used for Forts, Buildings, or Ships in the New World.
Sells on Ebay for up to $200.00

If more were found in your vicinity maybe a wreck is close by!
