I found this right near the front steps of an 1860s house. Any ideas about the age of the thing?

What is you have is a Victorian era door knob. During that period of time, there were many ornate designs. If it were a door bell cover, it would have a hole in the center. Neat find, BreezieVicDoorKnobs.webp

Not all of them have holes in the centre...
