Decorative Pottery from Dakota's

Acquired a baggie full of pottery shards, a gift from a friend. These are some of the best looking rim shards.

pretty nice
it is way different than the stuff i find

i like the rim pieces

LOL, way different that what I find too, but I am a ways away from the big river.

From the little I've seen of pottery around here, I seldom see 2 decorated pieces that look like another. I only have an ice cream pail about full of small pieces that I have found, and I have a little I've acquired, so I don't have much experience with it.
BUT, at some time some body tossed a fairly modern pot of the stuff that likely came out of a tourist trap in Mexico. Now those pieces sick out like a sore thumb when i see them.

I believe the sherds show the true inner beauty of the person that made their pottery. Every piece tells a story.

That's some very pretty pottery work, finely done!

the pottery i find at the sites in ND is like you say.....kinda like snow flakes.....every one a little different
i can post some images if you want just to show the theme of the designs here
one thing we date our pottery with is the shape or profile of the upper rim area
the abundance of missouri river clay and mussel shell to mix with ash made pottery so prolific that people up her usually don't save it unless it is a rim piece just the way you are displaying yours
those mussel from the river are horrible tasting, they are called 'unios'.....but they served many purposes: game pieces, and pendants, drinking cups.....
....and were pulverized and mixed with clay and ash to make the huge storage pots used in this area..........
.....more tha half the pottery rim pieces consistantly indicate diameters of ten to twelve inches

Dang! You find some big pieces up there. I was on some private ground near Chamberlain a few years ago, I was amazed, one area had so much laying around, you couldn't look at the ground and not see it. It was pretty beat up from all the frost damage and repetitious farming though, I didn't see much bigger than 1/2 inch pieces.

that's some great looking pieces you guys have. you can tell that the person who made them took pride in their work. Thanks for showing them.
