Found this cartridge at 10" deep on a hillside in a very remote area. Anyone have any ideas about the very unusual features of this? I can only assume that it was a toy, however, it does say "F A 31" on the bottom and the primer is unfired. Had a fun outing with a fellow TNET'r (Top Pop Top). :)

looks like it mite have been one that held a pencil. In late or middle 40s

Thats a dummy round. It was never live. The fluted case is a giveaway.

Definetley a "Dummie" round(probably a 30-06),made by the Frankford Arsenal....the two digit's are from the year it was made,1931.Nice find!!

Thanks for the great lead! I did a little more research on these and found out that these "Dummy" Rounds were used by range instructors who would sneak them into the magazines to detect flinching by soldiers in training.

That great! I've been shooting for years and years but have only heard of dummy rounds but never actually seen one. Very Cool find

I agree! .30-06 dummy round made by Frankford Arsenal in 1931. Dummy rounds were used by armorers to check the functioning of the rifle without having it go boom. Also use to train recruits in how to load/unload, etc, again without having it go...well, you know.
