Deer Lake dam remains empty

07/05/2007

-friendlyDEER LAKE — It’s been months since the dam in the borough held any water.

And, according to borough officials, it may stay that way for a while.

“It’s entirely dependent on the weather and getting the silt removed,” Donald E. Behler, borough council vice president, said this week. “Every time the lake bed has dried enough to get heavy equipment in, it rains and we have to get the heavy machinery out before it gets bogged down in the mud created by the wet weather.”

The borough has seen several work permits expire since the lake was drained in June 2006.

According to Behler, the lake was drained so repairs could be made to the dam.

Mayor Joseph E. Lynch said the state stepped in and told the borough that the lake had to be drained because of the silt.

“The original reason for draining the lake was to do the repairs,” he said. “Once the lake was drained we found there were some other repairs that needed to be made to the dam itself. We’re also trying to remove some of the silt that has built up. We have at least one group who is interested in taking the silt once we get it removed.”

Despite the problems with the weather, the council isn’t giving up.

“Our intention is to get all the necessary work done and refill it as soon as possible,” Behler said.

Lynch said he hopes the project will be done by winter.

The state Department of Environmental Protection and borough council President David B. Krause, who is in charge of the project, did not return calls earlier this week.

IF they get the Silt out, This will be a Great site to Detect.
Right now there is Several Feet of Mud, almost making the Lake
so shallow it can be considerd a Puddle when Filled.

Re: DEER LAKE : Schuylkill County to be DREDGED

The lake at Deer Lake, which sits empty and overgrown with weeds and grass, is another sore spot for residents.

“I’m really concerned with why the lake is not a lake anymore,” Bigg said. “It’s a marsh, a mosquito trap.”

Repairs to the upper silt basins, which were damaged in last June’s flooding, were the initial reason for draining the lake. According to Crouse, those repairs have been completed.

Now the borough is waiting for an agreement to be settled for the removal of silt in the lake bed.

According to council Vice President Don Behler, the necessity of removing the silt became apparent after the lake was drained.

“Yesterday, I met with a county representative who works with the DEP,” Crouse said. “We have an evacuator who is looking at being hired to remove the silt. We received tentative approval to begin removing silt from one section of the lake.”

The project’s commencement hinges on the ability of the contractor and the DEP to reach an agreement that satisfies both. A decision is expected to be reached within the next week, Crouse said.

Crouse also said if the agreement falls through, the borough does not have an alternate plan.

However, Hall said there are people in the area who have heavy equipment who would be willing to remove the silt. Crouse told her to provide him with the names and contact information for those willing to volunteer.

In the meantime, residents asked if the overgrowth in the lake bed will be mowed.

“We’re not going to cut the grass in the areas that will be evacuated,” Crouse said. “Once we know if the plan is accepted and where the silt will be piled, then we’ll cut the grass.”
