I've looked at some of the low end BHs and they don't seem to have a depth
indicator. Is this a nusance for some detectionists? I am used to being able to look at my depth meter and seeing how far I'm going to dig, even though I know that most targets are usually 2-4 inches. But sometimes I get surprised by a target 7 inches.

I've ran the Pioneer505 (Sharpshooter2) for a couple years. I really found the depth indicator a handy tool. It was reasonably accurate for coins. I especially liked it for the surface stuff at 0-2". You know you can just poke around in the grass, locate the object, and recover with no dig. I have used my sons BH junior and for very shallow stuff the signal was much more solid for surface coins than something deeper. You usually knew when you had a surface object. But there were times when it was a large iron object that was 8" deep.

As much as I loved the depth indicator, I have just ordered a Tesoro with no VID. You should be able to roughly tell depth by signal strength in this one.

My Pioneer 505 has a depth indicator and its quite handy.
