Diamond Tester

I figured I would post in here since you folks are more likely to have one. It may be time I thought about maybe getting on of these. Without spending three or four hundred dollars do you have any recommendations or one that you use and like. I see a lot of them on ebay but I would like to hear about experience with them.

Or better yet anyone have a used one they don't use anymore and want to sell........

Can't recommend a electronic unit Bill, but here is a cheap way to do a fast test, provided the stone is a fair size. Use a black marker and put a line on the stone. Diamonds have an oily feel to them and the line from the marker will bead up if it's a diamond as opposed to glass or other substances which will show a straight solid line. But don't decide by this method alone just use it to get yourself excited till you can do the real thing.
If you can't get a handle on it here, check out some local Jewelers and ask them what they use. If they have upgraded lately, they just might have a used one.

I don't have one yet, but this is the one I'm getting.
The reason is, it will test for moissinite as well as diamond and CZ.

Thanks Ralph I just heard that moissanite will test as a diamond on a regular tester. And come to think of it why should I buy one if your getting one, I could bring them to you

A while back,a friend gave me a good used Ceres Czeckpoint diamond tester.It works very well.It gives a beep and a diamond indicator light comes on,if the stone is a diamond Very easy to use.It is powered by 3 AAA batteries.I have used it on several ring finds this year.I am very satisfied with it.There are some on ebay right now.I really like mine.

Try this. Diamonds under a blacklight glow a white like color. You can get a blacklight just about anywhere especially now cause of Halloween, fakes or CZ do not. I read this on the net somewhere so I tried. My wife's wedding band the diamonds glow kind of an off white. This earing that I found does not.

Example: I found a gold ring with five small diamonds. Only one fluoresces, the other four just sit there.
Don't trust all that is on the internet! A lot of baloney is sold as steak.

So did you test all five diamonds? Or do you have 4 fakes and 1 real? The only reason I mentioned the blacklight is because they are so cheap right now. My son just happened to have one so I gave it a shot. Maybe that big old ear ring is real then!

Some diamonds glow and some do not, this characteristic has nothing to do with their value unless they have a strong blue glow, which can make a otherwise perfect diamond seem a bit hazy in the light. Yes, if it glows its a diamond - if it doesn't, that doesn't tell you anything. So if you have a ring and one glows in blacklight - that means you have at least one diamond. Since it wouldn't make to sense to mount one real diamond and the rest fake - I'd say that's an all diamond ring.

I second what he said. Not all diamonds fluoresce, and when they do, they can do so in different colors and different strengths. And, CZ can also fluoresce. Fluorescence is a property of gemstones, not only diamonds.
