So, I was browsing eBay the other day and found this:

Possibly RARE Wierd USA Monogram Copper Maverick Token with 13 Lines Looks Old | eBay

I knew I'd seen it in the Red Book before but didn't have it on hand so I bid up to what I was comfortable with losing on a potential fake but ended up not winning the auction.

My question though is do you all think that this was an authentic bar copper or a reproduction/fake?

Bar Copper

^That site has information on bar coppers

Extremely little chance it's real, and if you look at the sellers previous sales it's pretty obvious he's just playing stupid.

In my opinion, it's not likely that it would have slipped by the more knowledgeable bidders that usually troll ebay if it had any chance of being genuine.

yep, I bid on quite a few that aren't even listed as good as that and at the snipe it never fails to jump a hundred, or hundreds. Of course that's when the coin is real. When I win it's never an absolute steal like that would be, and under $100 for a bar cent you might as well say you're only paying the shipping.

On a related note, I stopped by the lcs today and he showed me 3 coins that a customer brought in that are going to PCGS for certification. One was a USA bar copper. Based on the provenance it's probably the real thing. Another item from the same consignor going to PCGS is an 1856 Flying Eagle. We both are 99.9% sure it is legit. It was cool to see one in person.

I bet they weren't purchased for $47. :)

I've sold several coins to someone who would have just about everything you see in the Colonial section of the redbook, including hundreds of varieties that aren't listed because the Rebook is more just a guideline for some. If he doesn't have it, it's most likely because there's not one available to buy.

possibly they were. The gentleman is in his 60's and he inherited these and many others from his father and grandfather who were in the banking business. In addition to what I mentioned, the shop owner told me he saw and looked through a bag of FE cents that contained 500-600 coins. Hopefully we'll get to see more of the collection in time

Free from an old collection definitely beats $47.
