By now, many of you have seen Russ' amazing 4 real in the banner or perhaps watched the video of the dig. I also got a coin that day, and thought I simply had a smooth British half penny. So, I didn't do any cleaning to it for a couple of days. Finally, I said, "what the heck, I can't hurt it anymore" and did a H2O2 bath and detail began to show itself...enough to get a positive ID! So, thanks to the members of several Facebook groups and my Instagram followers @scdigger, I quite possibly have the oldest coin dug in the upstate of SC!

Turns out, it is a: French Colonial Louis XIV 6 Deniers - minted between 1710-1712...WOW, WOW, WOW!

Here's a pic of my coin and then I've posted a finer example so you can see what it's supposed to look like!

Thanks for looking! By far, my oldest coin ever and quite possibly the oldest coin dug in the Upstate of South Carolina!!!
Merry Christmas!

Neat find. Never found one those.

Nice ID on that one! Congrats.

You got that Right. Might not seem that rare for the northeast but along with Russ's coin and now yours I have to agree. Especially from the area it came from. Congratulations Greg keep duggin son.
I vote Banner on your coin also.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours.

That's really cool, but, the date on the second coin is XIIII....isn't that 14? And wouldnt that make yours older than you thought?

Wow, this is the type of find i would expect more in my area, than in South Carolina. WTG! You seem to have a great hunting spot, wish you more. :laughing7:

Wow, very cool. My oldest so far is a 1777 half reale.

Awesome find!

Great save Greg, and that's a coin I've yet to recover up here. Based on the wear it makes sense that it was lost during the time frame of your camp. Can't wait to see what else you guys pull from that site. Good luck!!

Congrats on the super old coin find, exciting that it's among the oldest ever found in your area!

Oops. My Bad. I was reading the latin letters wrong. I was thinking the XIV was 16. But that would be XVI...(?) Been so long since the days of learning those things. Anyway it's way cool.

I would like to see more of the 'detail' that identifies it.
Do you also have an image of the back side?

Congratulations on that find. You guys have both made significant finds. I bet the surprises will continue too! Good luck.

Very nice find. Do you have pictures of the obverse and reverse? Thanks.
