By now, many of you have seen Russ' amazing 4 real in the banner or perhaps watched the video of the dig. I also got a coin that day, and thought I simply had a smooth British half penny. So, I didn't do any cleaning to it for a couple of days. Finally, I said, "what the heck, I can't hurt it anymore" and did a H2O2 bath and detail began to show itself...enough to get a positive ID! So, thanks to the members of several Facebook groups and my Instagram followers @scdigger, I quite possibly have the oldest coin dug in the upstate of SC!

Turns out, it is a: French Colonial Louis XIV 6 Deniers - minted between 1710-1712...WOW, WOW, WOW!

Here's a pic of my coin and then I've posted a finer example so you can see what it's supposed to look like!

Thanks for looking! By far, my oldest coin ever and quite possibly the oldest coin dug in the Upstate of South Carolina!!!
Merry Christmas!

Great recovery, looks like it had been around for a longtime in circulation. Congrats on the ID!

Saw your post on Instagram. What a great find! The coin made a long journey to that spot, makes you wonder who all held it. Can't wait to see the video of your site. I think you all found a once in a lifetime spot, that no one has detected. Congratulations! Hope you find many more great relics.

You didn't need Facebook or Instagram, could have just posted it here. :) Oldie for sure!

WTG on that! Still looking for my 1st French Copper.

I agree! The camp is a 1750ish camp...Russ' real was 1744 and in near perfect shape...the wear on this coin shows it's been carried for quite some time...I imaging this coin travelled oceans only to be dropped along a creek in upstate SC.

Thanks for looking.

What a cool find...man, a French coin from that period, in that part of the US? Love to imagine the story it could tell.
