Every time I go detecting it seems that I find something that broadens my view of history, engineering and the everyday lives of those who lived before.
This button went from being "cool,I think there is an eagle on this button" to being my best find to date!
Thanks again to everyone for all the information, perspective and encouragement and for helping me to realize what a treasure every find can be...

Well put , Iron Patch ; count me in too when that sale comes ! Since I started this hobby the goal has always been coins , coins , coins. (followed closely by precious jewelry). Now I was no exception early on , and still love those early coins. Not putting anyone down mind you , it's a natural tendancy. $$$$$$$. (after all they do call it TREASURE hunting, I started this way myself.) After a while though, and a little education along the way, one realizes that the most important and satisfying finds are historic , and often , as in this case , more cost valuable by far than say that pretty Barber half you just found , to the right people. ( PS -...a point of interest...... How many GW buttons do you think you'd see on here if they never had that scene in the movie "American Treasure" to bring them to light? I remember the days prior to, when they were pretty much only known to our small circle of colonial diggers and the going buying price for a real good one was $300 - $400 ! .... Another PS ! - in the years before the great Burns Civil War series ; the going rate on standard common US plates in reasonable condition was $25.00 ; eagle breastplates - $15.00 ! They really need to make a Diplomatic Corps movie now Argentum! ....among many others!
