I found this large cent the other day. I washed it off in a bucket of water on the property, and was able to see a date of 1826. Later in the evening, I looked at the coin again, and the date was completely gone. After a day of soaking in Olive Oil, still no date. Oh well......

Date or not still a great find. The next one will be better. :headbang:

Copper certainly doesn't hold up as well as silver in the ground. At least the majority of the design is still present and you were able to identify it. Is it possible it could have been 1836? The design looks to be more of an 1836 than 1826.

Happy hunting!

well found :) all depends on how your soil is found a 1731 copper coin the other day in mint condition

Silver can do that out here in Denver as well.
Watched a Seated Dime's date vanish while cleaning.
Would rather have the Large Cent, been way too long.
Very nice find.

Sorry about disappearing date, but I LOVE the color and appearance of this soft muted coin! Andi
