Dman Helps With "CSA Relics For Kids" Project + We Dug Bullets & Brass Today

Dman and Josh volunteered to help me dig more iron CW relics for the drawing for kids to be held at the local elementary school. At the last minute, Josh had to work. Pic #1 is most of our Sunday am finds. Pic #2 is the of the bullets and brass spur or harness buckle. We ranged out from the high iron area a bit to dig these but were still digging horseshoe pieces. The last pic is of Dman who was a bullet digging machine this morning. He dug all the bullets and I dug the brass buckle. We both dug many 30-06 cal. WW2 maneuver brass cartridges where they fired blanks during war games. Tennessee was selected for WW2 war games because of the landscape being a lot like France, Germany, and Italy. Excuse the pic angle as I was trying to avoid a shadow and was laughing at Dman telling Josh what we had found. We appreciate you looking and hopefully we can educate some school kids on the CW in the county and give those kids wanting a relic something to commemorate the CW sesquicentennial, Quindy.

We were lucky Donnie. Doug out hunted me on bullets today but I'll catch up. Let's go hunting soon, Quindy.

Re: Dman Helps With "CSA Relics For Kids" Project + We Dig Bullets & Brass Today

Check with the school if they can give the bullets away. I found out at a civil war enactment camp yesterday that local schools did not want the kids handling lead bullets for fear of poisoning. It baffled me. I wondered "are the kids going to sit there and lick them or something?"

The enactors who went to schools for programs actually used pewter bullets to alleviate fears.

Just an point to ponder.

Jay

P.s. I am awfully jealous of all the relics you dig! Keep up the good work!

Thanks Roger. I'd rather dig one good relic there than 20 relics from a U.S. camp. This camp is special because I had 2 Great Great uncles camped there. The kids will draw for the relics next week. Take care my friend & HH, Quindy.

Thanks Bill. Dman dug a target with a value of "3" on the F75 LTD on the display that was only 3 inches deep and it was the dropped .69 cal. 3 ringer. The brass buckle I dug rang up at "66". Go figure Bill!!! HH, Quindy.

I guess it's a good thing you did not listen to the guy in your last post and find another site! ::)
Keep up the good work with the kids!
Guess so Rob and I'm glad you are still alive after your weekend with the Jack Wagon MM-LOL. HH, Quindy.

Thanks Jay. You are correct about the bullets. I have been cleaning and clear coating the horsehoes, horseshoe pieces, and iron pot parts to give away. I pulled the nails from the shoes too. We won't give them bullets and when I make presentations to school kids, I put a .69 cal. 3 ringer in a small plastic bag so they can pass it around to avoid concerns. If CW bullets were harmful, I'd be dead by now-LOL.
My wife is the Librarian there and she did seek approval from the appropriate officials before I went to the trouble of cleaning and coating the iron relics. I typed a history of the camp to give away with each relic.
Jay, there are not nearly as many relics around here as Stones River and Shiloh but we have been lucky and the newer VLF detectors like the F75s and SE have been very productive.. It's not Virginia but I'm glad to live here. Thanks for your interest and HH, Quindy.

Nice finds Quindy. Boy we are finally getting some cooler weather. I just moved to the tri cities area so I have not been out much. I can't wait to get out. I talked to Mike and we are planning a hunt in about two weeks. This is the longest I have gone without hunting much. Take care and will talk to you soon.

Way to go guys. :hello2:
Not only a great thing you did for the kids, but you also got Dman away from the golf course.
Did you explain to the kids how to tell a Union shoe from a Confederate shoe?
I see Dman is holding one of those "U"nion shoes. :tongue3: :laughing9:

Thanks Randy. Glad you got that moving chore behind you. I'm eager to see what you, Mike, and Guy come up with this fall and winter. You are all not too far from Bean Station and the Longstreet CSA camps North of Knoxville. HH, Quindy.

Yes MM, he made sure he has that one turned right just for your taste as we discussed what you would say-LOL. Thanks for keeping up with the Tennessee Trio (by the way, I gave you credit in one of the upcoming W & E articles for naming us). HH, Quindy.

You are so right James. I don't profess to be an expert on CW history and relics but I do plan to do everything I can by writing articles and making presentations to schools and historical groups regarding CW history during the 4 year 150th Sesquicetennial celebration of the CW and beyond. Thanks for looking James and I wish you your usual productive relic and coin hunts this fall, Quindy.
