Do you carry protection when you go detecting?

Hi Folks,

I started carrying a hand gun after being jumped by
a durggie in a park while metal detecting.

I already have a Davis Ind. derringer that shoots 32
auto,

1-13-7.jpg

Yesterday,,,, I saw a sign at the sporting goods store
down the road. It said;

* 5 day gun sale *
30 to 50 percent off

I just had to stop. Then I just had to have this,

1-13-3.jpg

1-13-6.jpg

Here is a closer look at both of them,

1-13-4.jpg

1-13-5.jpg

1-13-10.jpg

1-13-12.jpg

Size comparison on tha 32 auto,

6-26-5-1.jpg

6-26-091-1.jpg

The American Arms is a little less than 1/2 inch longer,
and a little slimmer and about the same height. It is
less bulky than the Davis Ind. 32 auto.

1-13-9.jpg

After I bought it, I went out and shot a box of shells out
of it. (50 rounds) I also took some 2 inch thick phone
books to compare the penetration of these two guns,

1-13-1.jpg

I got to shoot a lawyer and his car?.... lol

Here are a few bullets I recovered.

1-13-2.jpg

In the initial test was two shots from each pistol into
a fresh phone book that was backed by another phone
book.

The results were;

NAA 22 Mag <> 2.1 inches of penetration
NAA 22 Mag <> 1.9 inches of penetration
Average penetration <> 2.0 inches

This 22 Mag bullet was sticking into the second phone
book, so I called it 2.1 inches,

1-14-1.jpg

Davis 32Auto<> 1.4 inches of penetration
Davis 32Auto<> 1.2 inches of penetration
Average penetration <> 1.3 inches

According to my questionable Arkie test, The NAA 22
Mag may have about 35% more penetration.

I believe that both pistols may have about the same
amount of energy, but, the smaller 22 Mag makes a
smaller deeper hole.

I have shot another box now.

After shooting several types of targets with both pistols,
I believe the 22 Mag is more likely to penetrate clothing
and other obstacles.

Conclusion;

They are both very loud!!! (for little guns)

The American Arms 22 Mag is a 5 shot revolver. It can
carry five rounds without the firing pin resting on a shell.
That allows me to safely carry it fully loaded .

The American Arms 22 Mag with a 1 and 1/8 inch barrel
is very well made and is far more accurate than the Davis
Ind 32 Auto with a 2 and 1/4 inch barrel. I can shoot three
or four times as far with about the same accuracy as the
32 auto derringer. The action with the 22 is smooth, and
the trigger pull is nice and crisp. (no play) All five rounds
can be fired rapidly with reasonable accuracy for close up
use.

The Davis Industries 32 Auto is very cheaply made with a
terrible trigger pull and it almost takes both hands to cock
it. It gets pocket grit in it and will not rotate the firing into
the upper barrel sometimes!!! It just does not seem as
reliable as the 22 Mag. But it does what it is supposed to
do most of the time.

I am happier with my new little companion.

1-13-8.jpg

I saved myself about $25 in about 30
minutes.

I wanted a pocket holster for my new
NAA 22 Mag.

I could have got one like these for $20
plus shipping,

pocketHolsters.jpg

But, instead, I just made one out of an
old billfold that had thin soft leather. I
like it better..... It's soft leather and it
covers the hammer,

1-15-1.jpg

I know my sewing looks bad,,, but that
ain't no biggie for this old Arkie.

I know a fella that has been carrying an
American Arms 22 Mag for ten years and
loves it. I am starting to see why.

After leaving the shooting range, (down tha road), I took
a few photos out my car window.

Thought you all might like a little Arkie sight seeing,

Great post. :hello2: I know I'd take the American Arms over the Davis any day of the week.

You asked: "Do you carry protection when you go detecting?"

I say: Why stop there?

tabdog, I like your ingenuity in making that holster, but I don't like the hammer being covered. That will hinder you from drawing with one hand; the holster is going to come out with it. I have a pocket holster for my LCP which is silky smooth inside, and has rubbery strips and a square-sorta shape on the outside, to keep it (the holster) in the pocket. I have tried itmany times, and the holster always stays put.

How has it worked for you? Can you draw quickly with one hand?

I carry a Kel-Tec P-11, such as in your one photo above. I ordered the replacement steel slideguide and the belt clip. Clipping it inside of the waistband of my pants puts it very handy and it doesn't "stick out" for folks to see. I've carried this little 9mm for the last 5 years and have gotten so used to having it, that if I leave it at home, it's almost as if I'm not fully dressed. ;D .............therefore I NEVER leave it at home. I use an old leather, Buck folding knife sheath as the carrier for my spare clip; fits like it was made for that job; not to mention that you can buy a knife sheath at lower prices than you'll pay for "officially designated" spare clip holders. And a big plus is the snap flap. If a person doesn't look reeeeeeel close, they can't tell there's an ammo clip inside instead of a knife.
All together, that gives me 20 rounds of wicked +P hollow-point 9mm shockers.

Hay Bill,

That flap helps the gun stay put.

I can flip that piece of leather with my thumb and it comes out
very easily. The holster just seems to stay in my pocket. The
leather is so soft that it kind of sticks to the cloth in my pocket,
but the pistol slides smoothly.

The ones in the photo have stiffer, thicker leather. I think the
pistol would stick in those and be hard to pull out without
pulling the holster out.

But not mine.

That is why I like the one I made better.

I have shot 3 boxes now (150 rounds). I practice pulling it
out and shooting.

It is a fun little thing to shoot. These little guns are kind
of new to me. I used to think I had to have a 45 APC for
protection. Now, ease of carry is getting more important
because a 45 is to uncomfortable for detecting, especially
in the summer time when I do most my detecting.

OK tab, I should have known you would have tested it good. Glad to hear it works. As far as your sewing goes, no need to apologize. If it does the job, in don't need to look purdy. Besides, if you really want to spiff it up, next time you're going by the shoe repair shop, drop in. Bet he sews it for you for a cup of coffee. :)

I forgot to mention that the hard part is putting it back into the
holster because it is so soft. I have to take it out to put it back
in.

Hey, Tab:

Have you had any problems with finding rounds for that Colt lately? The lady who runs the Sporting Goods dept. in our local Wal-Mart Superstore told me that they've been restricted from ordering .38 Special and .357 Mag. rounds. And, they've not been able to get in 20 ga. #3 Buckshot in a loooooooong time. Seems like everyone else is having the same problem getting those 20 ga rounds, too.

Hay Short Stack,

I have noticed that lots of different rounds are getting hard to
get a hold of. I do not want a political discussion, but ever sense
we got our new president, sporting and hand gun ammunition has
been becoming much more scarce. I have noticed the price going
real high in sporting goods stores also.

Now days, I make sure I can replace the ammo before I go target
practicing.

Agreed, I don't want to turn this thread into a political "wag" either. I've expected the cost of ammo to go up with higher excise taxes, so I buy extra ammo of all calibers whenever I can find it. Also, lately I've been thinking about getting one of those newer types of blackpowder rifles. Wally still sells those, plus the powder pellets and .50 cal. jacketed rounds are in plastic-pacs right next to them. ;D Plusssss, I don't think you have to register blackpowder guns. And, those $100 crossbows on eBay are looking better and better. The costs of long bows have gotten frigging UNREAL.

I have a north American 22 lr it is my favorite conceal weapon. It is a decent weapon since it is small powerful and LOUD.
The way I see it is if they need to see the weapon you have to use it. I will do all I can to pervent an attack I am alert when I am in public I wear plain watch no gold and my car is a simple non modified unit.
If I feel threatened I will walk away from the detector first if that is all they want cheap fix but if they continue toward me and want to get within 10 yards of me I have to KILL only 5 shots you have to make them count so aim for maximum stopping with a head shot or center mass lung/heart shot. I can't run handicapped but I can shoot and strike with my digging tool.

I have a Kel-Tec P 11 9mm and the North American Arms .22 mini revolver with the fold away grip. With the folding grip, it folds like a lock back knife. Check the NAA website to see the folding stock. Yes, I carry a gun everywhere I go.

Hey again,Tab.About a yr ago,I traded a little Baretta 25 for this Phoenix 22 target pistol(new) with two barrels(3"/5").I haven't shot the 3" barrel but the 5" is dead on at 25yds.Very nice inexpensive gun. With the 3" it is about the size of a ppk only slimmer. If you scroll down, you'll see it with the 5".Both barrels are tightly rifled.

I had one of those when they first came out. It was a nice gun for the money and really fun to shoot. I shouldn't have sold it. I think I may try to find another.
