Do you find metal detecting to be a on and off hobby?

I have lots of hobbies, but amateur radio and metal detecting are at the top of the list. I should add, they're both expensive! After all, he who dies with the most toys wins!

Metal detecting is FAR from expensive for a hobby. Have you ever seen how much money people spend to play golf every year? What about the costs involved with building, repairing and traveling for off-road driving? Ever seen the costs of owning horses? I know many, many hunters who spend more than the cost of a CTX just for out of state tags and licenses every single year, then add in the costs of travel and lodging.

No, metal detecting is one of the cheapest hobbies that doesn't take place sitting on your butt.
