What Hardship do You Experienced in Order to Metal Detect

My wife doesn’t like me gone all day metal detecting, so I wake-up at 5am, hunt for 4 hrs or so and back in time for lunch. But that isn’t MY hardship. Nor is the ½ hr or 1 hr drive to the beach. My hardship is having to walk the dog for 15 minutes before I leave the house. So between 5:30 and 5:45am, I walk the dog in a coyote infested area with rattle snakes and such always lurking by. I have carried a night stick, hand gun and now a stun gun that I carry mostly for the scary sound. Always on the alert. But metal detecting in the early morning is all worth it and more! Was wondering what hardships others experience in order to enjoy the hobby or in my case obsession (wife’s opinion).

Your right, you have an obsession. I'm sure your wife would be a little more impressed if you showed a little but of that obsession on honey do's.

For us over the hill, sliding rapidly down in the valley hunters, it's the back and knees is our hardship.

Time, taking time away from the chore list.
But hitting the Honey-Due list earns those brownie points where one can do no wrong. (for awhile)
So when I do get out it's full day-then I pace the next 2 days as I do need to recover from the 10+ hr day.
Never admitting things might hurt/ache from the day out.
Though as we age we get a little more selective, and a little wiser regarding the hunting.

I'm 48 and we adopted a baby 8 yrs ago. It's a lot our everyday schedule and even weekends. That's why I go detect near my work on my breaks lol. I don't have a lot of time to go on my days off like I used too

When I was married to #1 (1983), detecting for a couple hours was a way to save my sanity.

Married to #'s 2 and 3, there was no time for detecting, but I did survive. There was
an extended break between 2 and 3, and I did quite a bit of detecting during that time.

Married #4 in Oct. of '02..best thing I ever did. Retired now, I've got nothing
but time, for the most part. Trying to get the carcass back in some kind of
shape (other than round) so I can get out there and swing a coil again.

I relax when metal detecting. I don't think about my two ex-wives, how many hundreds of thousands of dollars I've paid in child support, or the fact I don't yet have enough cash for my new Robinson 44 helicopter. My hardship is trying to get back up after I kneel down to recover a freaking bottle cap!

Yes, this is indeed a problem. Generally, I don't kneel down without first having
a plan in place to get back up. Seeing the doc next week, and hoping they'll
give me some rehab or therapy to get the legs/back in better shape for detecting
this summer, and I'd really love to take a trip down to Nevada this Spring, before
it gets too hot.

Not true, in my case. Actually, I was using it as an example of "wisdom gained".
My wife and I will have been married for 24 years, come October....we're both old and
worn out, got a bunch of grandkids, and we've never been happier.

She'd be thrilled for me to be able to get out (on the regular) and do something
I enjoy, and there would be fresh brownies waiting for me when I got home. Took me
four tries, but I got a winner...

You know yer gettin old when you bend over to pick up a bottle cap and think about what else you can do while you're down there. At least you're not there yet.
