Do you need a permit to metal detect in New Jersey?

No, you can detect in most place in NJ without a permit but there are certain parks that do require one and there are other parks where it is not permitted. This is definately not a complete list but I know Cheesequake and Island Beach State Park require permits which are free just stop by the rangers office. Sandy Hook is completely off limits. When in doubt you should just ask a ranger. I've found that they are all very nice and will often give you good advise on where to detect.
