Dug this near a swamp next to a once Spanish settlement. The pics are rough but it seems to be covered in design. Any thoughts?

Im afraid you are jumping to conclusions. Have you tested it with a magnet yet?

It is magnetic. The magnet doesn't completely stick. Even where the metal is closer to being exposed, but there's definitely an attraction.

Next step (if you care to), electrolysis. Get rid of some of the rust - maybe make the outline a bit more clearly defined.
