Does anyone search bills?

I pay attention to bills that I get in change and such but was wonderign if anyone gose to the bank and gets a couple hundred in 1's and looks through them for old/error bills? Or any denomination? Is it worth the time? Thanks for any info

LOL.... OK I will fess up.... I use to go to the bank and give them a hundred dollar bill and ask for five dollar bills. I would go to the next bank after I searched for star notes and trade them in for ten dollar bills. I would search them then go to the next bank and trade for fives and just keep going until I ran out of banks. I have found quite a few that way. I only did that a few times.

I don't really search them, but I have found probably 20 or so $100 bill starnotes in the last 6-8 months....and a few $20 starnotes. I always check when I get my cash after dumping.

I don't keep them. If anyone is interested in them let me know. I am sure I will find more of them.

I've worked with money since the mid-80s and always save anything unusual. Around the early 90s I started saving star notes and web notes (check out http://www.quadrigaancients.com/web/ for info on the latter). The oldest star note I've found so far is 1974.

Funny you should ask. I just start searching bills, myself. I'm trying to find all series, all federal banks for $1 and $2 bills, and all series for $5, $10, $20. I'm saving the best examples I find. So far I haven't searched too many. In comparison to coins it is a nice change of pace, but a bit strange. I'd say the breakdown for $1 bills is 15% 2006 series, 50% 2003A series, 25% 2003 series, 10% everything else. The oldest I've found is 1981A, although a friend did it for longer and in greater quantity than me and found all series back to 1963. The condition of the bills is, of course, far worse than coins. I haven't tried to dump and massively large number of ones yet, although I have been paying for everything in $1 and $2 bills. Now if only I can convince my wife to buy our groceries in ones.

Yea I keep them. I think the best way to collect these things is to get yourself a copy of "Paper Money Values" magazine(I think it comes out monthly). Anytime you pick up an interesting bill, just check the value in the magazine. That is how I determine whether or not I will keep a certain star note or not. Some of these star notes actually have some value now, and should appreciate over time. Plus, even if saving these notes never directly benefits you, can you imagine the joy that someone will have 50 or 100 years down the road when they find your stash ... Just something to think about anyhow.. HH, Gpurs...

I used to search full bundles of ones and twos, but now I've graduated up to full bundles of $50's and $100's.

My best find was a few Series 1934 $100's from the Chicago district and lately I found an EE* $50 (Series 2004 Richmond District star note, only 800,000 printed).

When I cash out I usually ask if they have any "old currency".

Over the past couple years I have found a couple silver certificates (Blue Seal), maybe 5-10 US Notes (Red Seal), quite a few star notes, and handful of other pre-1970 FRNs.

Although usually the teller says no, some tellers hold old currency aside waiting for someone to ask for it. I have had tellers tell me they have had the old bills in their drawer for months before I showed up. If you never ask, you never know.

The oldest I have found is a few 1928 Series $2 US Notes.

Thats a good idea GMan. I need to do soem searching to see what sells on Ebay. I knwo people keep bills with serial numbers with alot of the same number and such. I just need to do more research before I get started I guess lol. I want to find older money for my personal collection but i want to pull out any other bills that I can sell to support my treasure hunting habit lol.

i have 7 like new consecutive number 100 dollar starnotes ? keep or dump?series 1996.i have had 4 a long time but misplaced and recently re found. trouble with the high denom notes is u cant sell on ebay becuz they charge fee on the hunderd dollar face value. if note sells for less than 110 u lose money
