Steel pennies? I have done several boxes of pennies, have gotten pennies from all decades including a 1908 indian penny, 1909s wheat, and many Red BU wheats, but never gotten a steel penny from 1943... Does Brinks use a magnet to cull out steel pennies? Though i do get plenty of magnetic canadian pennies, never gotten a steel cent.

Anyone have luck with brinks penny boxes?

If they were and their magnet collected the 1943 cents, why would it miss the "magnetic" Canadian pennies you mentioned?

Search the magnet and keep the steelies and throw the canadians back??

I certainly haven't found any Canadian cents that are attracted to a magnet (at least not a relatively weak magnet)...now the dimes and quarters on the other hand are very attracted.

I think the reason you don't find many steelies is two-fold: The coins stand out and people pick them out of circulation readily (and people have been doing so for almost 70 years). Also, most coin counting machines have magnets on them intended to keep junk out. This also keeps some steel cents and Canadian coins from making it through. I wouldn't say Brinks does it intentionally to get steel pennies though. They are worth next to nothing anyways.
I would guess they run coins through more magnets though, and inevitably get some steel cents.

BTW, I have often wondered what these coin sorting companies do with all the "junk" coins that are attracted to their magnets. I think it would be awesome to get a big lot of these and search through them.

No,no,no,no.
Just a lot fewer steels out there to find. I've pulled 2 off the coin counter magnet the last few weeks. The first was when I bought the bag and found over 60 wheats. More people tend to hold on to them.

I've never gotten a steelie from a Brink's box.
Which Canadian cents stick to a magnet? :dontknow:

I love the "cull" posts that pop up every time a CRHer is on a cold streak or hasn't found something in particular. I guarantee these companies aren't culling anything.

Which makes me wonder, is the Fed culling Flowing Hair Half Dimes?!?! Why can't I find one!!!?!?!?!?!

I think my job is "culling" my paycheck :icon_scratch:

I culled a solid roll of steelies last year. Oops! My wife did.

I've gone through 6 Brinks boxes in the past 3 weeks, not a single magnetic coin found yet. I doubt they intend to cull the 1943 steels intentionally, just happens when trapping for magnetic slugs. I used to get them stuck on the magnets in my coin-op machines years ago.

I've done about 12 boxes and have never found a steelie yet. I have found coins that stick to a magnet though, but not very often. I agree that the public sees that they look different and they take them for themselves.
