🔎 UNIDENTIFIED Does Gold in river or creek beds have different shades?

Hello,

I have found what I think is small gold in a creek bed in Illinois. The rock identifier app shows it as gold the nitric acid test shows positive as they do nothing in the acid. My question is they are not gold in color, more of a brown but when take a picture they shine some. Any help identifying would be helpful.

Impossible to say from the photo.

Try tapping some of the "gold" with a hammer and see if it breaks up into crumbs/dust or if it flatten out without breaking up.

Gold is malleable and will not breakup/crumble into dust, it will flatten out, if your "gold" does flatten then it's highly likely it's real gold but still need to be tested with a gold test kit to confirm.

The bigger whiter piece crumbled when tapped. The others did not had to really apply pressure for one to split into 2 pieces. Others I could tap and the edges would flatten by soft tapping of hammer.

can you post a pic of it flattened?
also, how are you finding it? just picking it up from the creek or panning?

This was found digging down about 2 to 3 ft on downside of creek bed where it was shallow in a spot.

What part of IL are you in? The northern half has till from the last glacier. Most of the IL gold I’ve heard about is flour gold and difficult to recover.

I've seen placer gold with different shades. Placer gold found in the heavy metal polluted streams washed out around Lake and Summit county's of Colorado almost have a look of copper to the gold.
