Don't Throw Those Pulltabs Away! Save Them For Charity!

Everyone always complains about digging up all off those pulltabs. But how many thousands upon thousands could we be collecting for a worthwhile cause?

I did pull up the Ronald McDonald House in Pittsburgh, PA and they have the same program. I will start saving my pull tabs from now on.

Hey Lady, thank you for posting this. I cant think of a better organization to benefit from all my nasty pull tabs! Ive got a bunch of em saved, & I will continue to bring em home for the lil' tykes!

My hat's off to you for making all of Tnet aware of such a great program. With all of the pulltabs that are found if
even just a part of them find their way to a McDonald House it would be a great help to them.

There is a McDonald House in Detroit by the Children's Hospital.

Thanks you guys, I was only saving the pulltabs from our soda cans, but after looking at the site, there's alot more things that they can use!

Some of the posts on here get hundreds of views, this one can use a few more.........

Don't know how to get started? I bet if you asked at your favorite bar/restaurant they might even be saving them already. If not, you could ask them to. Don't have a drop off point near you? Maybe call one of the chapters from my website and ask if you can mail them.....how much can a box of pulltabs weigh?

Just a few suggestions to maybe get more people interested in this great cause!

When I looked at the local website for me, it says if you can't bring the tabs in that they have recycling places to take them too. They give the list of sites with addy and phone numbers. They said to take the tabs to them then when you get the money to send them a check for the amount you got from the recycling place with a note from organization, etc. that saved the tabs.

I am going to see if the schools my kids attend can get involved in this. I can supply them with containers and store them in my garage until I have enough to take to recycling center. Then once a year send in a nice check to them.

I has always heard that this was an urban myth....and if not, why not the whole can? It's all aluminum....

It is definitely NOT a myth. We have been saving them for years. My grandson has had numerous surgeries at Shriner's Hospital in Sacramento, CA. There is a huge bin in the lobby to dump your pulltabs into and the monies collected put parents up at Ronald McDonalds House while kids go through treatments/surguries. I repeat, it is NOT a myth. The only reason I could "guess" as to why they don't take the whole can is most folks would keep large amounts to themselves. They probably collect more from folks that just want to do something nice and pulltabs are a small investment. That or, some rich metal detecorist is tired of pulltabs and is willing to pay for any pulled out of circulation.

The reason they don't take the whole cans is a matter of space pure and simple. The weight of the amount of pull tabs that would fit in the space of a single can is many many times greater.

Lady, when they first took my grandson to Shriners and they found out he was going to need multiple surgeries on both feet, my son asked the Dr what the prognosis might be. The doctor told him that he would never be a long distance runner. My son said "Who is? As long as he can walk behind me and carry a tackle box is all I need him to be capable of." Just this week I watched my grandson "RUN" to the bus stop. Thank you again Shriners and thanks again to Ronald Mc Donald House.

My son has a medical issue that makes it necessary for us to travel out of state for treatment. The nearest specialist is about 1,500 miles away. I won't bore you with details of the medical issue, but it is serious although not life threatening.

To make a long story short, our insurance does not cover the treatment, and we are expecting to travel for treatment about 5 times over the next year or so. We have made one trip so far and we have our next trip planned for the middle of next month. We can expect to travel every six weeks or so.

We are like everyone else these days, living paycheck to paycheck with not much left over at the end of the month. The treatment and travel is fairly expensive, but we are able to stay at the Ronald McDonald House, and it makes all of the difference. We simply could not do it otherwise.

I must say, before our first trip, I was a little leary of this arrangement, never having been to a RMH. I was nervous about a lot of things, but mainly because we would be in a strange city in a strange part of the country and we would be staying at this RMH which I knew nothing about at the time.

When we got there and checked in, I was amazed. The house where we stayed (and will be staying agian in the future) is fantastic! It has excellent security (the subject of most of my apprehension), a very friendly and welcoming staff, clean and very nice common areas and rooms, and a huge kitchen. The common areas have lots of toys for the kids, tv's, x-box, and a bunch of other cool stuff. The kitchen is huge, with a stocked fridge and pantry. Different charity groups serve dinner every night and every meal we ate there was fantastic. There are laundry rooms and all sorts of other stuff that makes life easier when you are away from home. I can't say enough good things about the RMH and how they have helped us out. Everything from the food to the laundry detergent is absolutely free.

If we had to pay for a hotel and eat at restaurants while we are there getting treatment, It would just about double the cost of the entire ordeal. We just would not be able to do what we are doing if it were not for the RMH. It is an awesome place and I would like to thank each and every one of you who have contributed to the RMH over the years.

zlathim.........thanks so much for sharing your story! I am really glad to hear from someone else that has benefited from this orginization. I hope eveything is working out for you and your family.
