The cap of the mushroom is what you see on the top. Sometimes red or white, occasionally other colors.

This mushroom is actually about 1" (inch) tall.

Hmm weird. have grown certain oyster mushrooms that have had mutations where a cap and stem would grew out of another cap. Never seen it in nature though.
