Relic Hunting
Managed a few hunts since the snow melted about 10 days ago. Nothing spectacular especially compared to what I got used to find while on the trip in Europe. I got to get used to the different context, no choice...

One of the finds was on my list for a while.

Also managed to ID a strange relic I have found while on the trip to Europe in March. Wasn't sure what it was as the item was unlike anything I have found in the past.

It seemed to have a tiny glass eye. After cleaning it I managed to look into it and was surprised to discover some type of picture or tiny drawing of a naked women. Seems to be a 150 years old "peep show" relic... Let's just say I was extremely surprised... A very cool and unusual relic.

Very nice hunting, grats!

Well you may have to “adjust”, but all I have to say is you found two tokens that are on my list. The blacksmith token and the ships & commerce token are outstanding finds bro

Nice looking dime, I got my first today! (not a seated though)

That KG3 looks great, and I know much better in person as pics of coins with a green patina don't often represent the coin very well.

Throw in a 12 pack and you got it all my friend Excellent finds Tommy

Wow want a great bunch of finds! That is one of the best kg III reverses I've ever seen! That ships token is really nice... The peep show thingamajig! is amazing too! What is a blacksmith token? Is that counterfeit? Great finds! Thanks!

Forgot to mention the 1812 button and the half cent (those are not easy to find! ) very nice on those too!

Thanks xcopperstax. The Blacksmith token is a type of "evasion currency" .

"...Previous to 1837, when the lack of specie caused copper change to be accepted in bulk, there lived in Montreal a blacksmith of dissipated habits. He prepared a die for himself, and when he wished to have a "good time" he struck two or three dollars in these coppers, and thereby supplied himself with sufficient change with which to gratify his wishes.."

WOW those are some awesome finds!

All of those finds are amazing! HUGE congratulations to you, and thanks for sharing!

Aureus, you are making it too hard to pick a favorite. Great half cent, super KG, awesome commerce token. That peep show relic is very cool. I would guess that is the first ever posted on TNet.

Nice coin haul. That dime is a beauty. Congrats

Really nice coppers and the old Seated Dime is sweet. Congrats!

The picture thing is really neat , you old you think t is? And type of metal ?

I believe it's from late 1800's. Close to the birth of photography. I have seen similar ones online but there aren't that many. It seems to be made out of silver and was attached to something made of iron as I can see some traces of rust at the opposite side.

Here's a similar item but without the erotic picture.

My God what a hunt!!! Congrats again on some great finds! :occasion14:

Using evasion as a descriptive word is not the best choice, because there's a specific type of counterfeit called evasions.... just like there is a category of blacksmiths tokens. So the blacksmith token is a type of counterfeit.

Evasions - Atkins - Irish Tokens by Barry Woodside

What I had said earlier is that it seems to be a better match for an evasion than it does a Blacksmith, but it is listed as a Blacksmith.

Those are some nice coppers you found there.
That peep show relic is quite the find too.
Keep em coming

I relied on a few sources that stated Blacksmith tokens as evasion rather than counterfeit. Some other sources suggested they were the counterfeits of the evasion tokens (which makes little sense to me) and others that they were purely counterfeit coins. As I have mentioned before that particular Blacksmith has the GLORIOUS struck on it rather than GEORGIVS which would better fit into the evasion type as you have mentioned.
