Relic Hunting
Managed a few hunts since the snow melted about 10 days ago. Nothing spectacular especially compared to what I got used to find while on the trip in Europe. I got to get used to the different context, no choice...

One of the finds was on my list for a while.

Also managed to ID a strange relic I have found while on the trip to Europe in March. Wasn't sure what it was as the item was unlike anything I have found in the past.

It seemed to have a tiny glass eye. After cleaning it I managed to look into it and was surprised to discover some type of picture or tiny drawing of a naked women. Seems to be a 150 years old "peep show" relic... Let's just say I was extremely surprised... A very cool and unusual relic.

Great post, great finds! Can't think of much more to say but wow!

Peep relic is awesome. I have never seen one. For me that is saying something. Neat bizarre and unusual

Sick. Absolutely sick.

Well you may have to “adjust”, but all I have to say is you found two tokens that are on my list. The blacksmith token and the ships & commerce token are outstanding finds bro

Thanks man. I believe it's my first Ships,Colonies and Commerce token. Couldn't be happier with the condition.

All counterfeits served the purpose to evade or deceive and the vast majority have form of listing.

Evasions like the list I posted
British contemporary counterfeit (listed by families)
Blacksmith tokens listed in the Charlton (your coin being BL-37)
Machin's Mills (American made and have their own listing for varieties)

We do not get to decide where each goes, because they are what they are, and the listing is what it is... my point is I just think your coin seems more like it should be an evasion and not a Blacksmith... but it's not, it's a Blacksmith. Now whether any English books list it as an evasion I do not know. If not, maybe that was a factor when it was decided it was a Blacksmith token.

I relied on a few sources that stated Blacksmith tokens as evasion rather than counterfeit. Some other sources suggested they were the counterfeits of the evasion tokens (which makes little sense to me) and others that they were purely counterfeit coins. As I have mentioned before that particular Blacksmith has the GLORIOUS struck on it rather than GEORGIVS which would better fit into the evasion type as you have mentioned.

Nice work Aureus. You have been digging some nice coins/relics. Congrats!

Nice looking dime, I got my first today! (not a seated though)

I'll just need to start finding some of your hammered silver coins over here and all will be in order. :laughing7:

Thanks Brendan75. I have to give credit to my S9 camera for being able to focus on such a small area (around 1 mm wide).

Thanks xcopperstax. The Blacksmith token is a type of "evasion currency" .

"...Previous to 1837, when the lack of specie caused copper change to be accepted in bulk, there lived in Montreal a blacksmith of dissipated habits. He prepared a die for himself, and when he wished to have a "good time" he struck two or three dollars in these coppers, and thereby supplied himself with sufficient change with which to gratify his wishes.."

Fascinating info thanks! I had actually read of a blacksmiths token recently but I forgot the details of it.

Fabulous Aureus, Congrats! That peeper looks to be very elegant. I wonder how it was carried? Watch fob maybe.

Best wishes!

In Colonial America when the British only dealt in script, the Spanish 8 real piece was the preferred currency but I expect you could have bartered with 1 oz copper slugs as well. I've heard from a lot of Vets that in many countries, where we've stationed troops for long periods, troops were paid in MPC (military personal currency). The locals wouldn't take them, only greenbacks.

Look closely for any marks on the beehive and bees. Something is telling me that it is very rare.

Aureus, you are making it too hard to pick a favorite. Great half cent, super KG, awesome commerce token. That peep show relic is very cool. I would guess that is the first ever posted on TNet.

I'm not sure, but personally have never seen them before on any forum I visited over the years. Probably more common in Europe, but again not sure.
