Hi All,

I had one of those weekends we all dream about. Oddly enough it began as one we all dread. The wife was out of town so I decided to visit my family in SE PA. My family land has given up many colonial coins and relics in the past year and my dad just cut the field so I had high hopes. I hunted the field all day Saturday and found nothing, nada, zip. On to plan B for Sunday. I decided to hunt my grandmother's yard as it is very near an old homesite. I had hunted a little at this site but it is really trashy and afterall there was the field full of colonials(so I thought) to hunt. Well to my great surprise the yard was full of treasures. I had to dig a lot of tin, foil, and shotgun shell ends to find it but it was worth it. My finds for the day are:

1-1804 Draped bust half cent
1-1836-Capped bust half dime
3-Indian head cents-1861 fatty, 1864(awesome condition), 1896
1-1911 V nickle
1-CW US general service button(Scoville Co Mfg.Waterbury backmark w/ shank)
6-flat buttons-3 Warrented Orange backmark, 1 London: Double quality
1-complete suspender buckle
1-3 ring minie bullet
1-possible counterfeit coin
and other assorted relics

My brother also hunted with me and he found an 1852 large cent, 1860 fatty Indian, a nice brass bridal rosette and other nice relics. It was a great day.

Thanks for looking and HH

If I remember correctly these are some type of nail used in Cedar roofing.

I looooooooove the Draped Bust half cent, and that Bust dime is AWESOME! Those finds will keep you warm for quite a while.

Keep on hunting with that fever!

Wow!!! All nice digs but i am smitten with that half cent, she's a beauty. Does your 64 Indian Head show the "L" ? If it does and it's in as good a shape as it looks from the picture it is probably a $200 coin,at least. Great job!!!

Incredible bunch of finds. I don't know where to start, that half dime is awesome and so is the half cent and IH. Any plans to put the half cent in peroxide? That coin looks to have a lot of detail underneath the environmental damage. Banner IMO.

Yeah, we've had these before...

"Those are copper pins used to fasten down the bottom of asbestos shingles on roofs. The tops of the shingles are nailed with copper roofing nails. The flat part of the pin tucks underneath the sides of the underlying tiles while the pin sticks up through the overlying tile, which has a pre-drilled hole in it for that purpose. The pins are then bent over to hold the bottom of the overlying tile down to prevent wind uplift. These were used primarily on "diamond-shaped" asbestos tiles. (See http://www.slateroofcentral.com/asbestos-repair.html for a rough sketch of diamond asbestos tiles). The pins are situated where the tiles touch each other on the sides. At that point, the flat part of the pin slips underneath the two tiles. The overlying tile has a hole at that point and the pin sticks up through that hole , then is bent over."
