A couple weeks ago i set out on an overseas trip to visit family and do some beach detecting with my brother.
I just got back and WOW what a trip it was! By far the best two weeks i have ever had.
Anyhow...here is a quick timeline breakdown and what we found.
Day One – Surf Showdown
With the Deus 2 in hand and waterproof headphones on, I stepped into calm tropical water alongside my brother. Within the first hour, a sharp high tone led me to a silver Vivienne Westwood belt ring—untarnished and likely freshly dropped. It was the only significant find of the day, but it felt like a promising start.
Day Two – Solo Gold
The next morning, I hunted alone—just me, the sand, and the waves. Sweep after sweep brought the usual: pull tabs, bits of can slaw, more pull tabs. Then came the signal—the one that keeps us all swinging. The kind that fills you with the boundless energy of a child on a trampoline. Five inches down, right at the water’s edge, I uncovered a diamond wedding band. It was as brilliant as the day it was lost. I held it up in disbelief, quietly thanking Santa for a Christmas gift in March. It was my first ring with a diamond—an unforgettable moment.
Day Three – Dream Meets Reality… Sort Of
On the way to the beach, I told my brother about a vivid dream I had from the night before: a large gold coin buried deep in the sand, about the size of a half-dollar. In the dream, I never quite reached it before waking. It lingered with me, so real it bordered on déjà vu. My brother laughed it off. “Just a dream,” he said.
Fifteen minutes later, I was in the water with my Nox 900. Less than an hour after our conversation, my brother tapped me on the shoulder, grinning like the Joker in a Batman movie. He had found a half-ounce gold coin set in a bezel. I could hardly believe it—my dream had come true, just not for me.
His luck didn’t stop there. That same day, he found a 14k Guam seal pendant, and a few days later, a 24k gold wedding band.
After that, the gold dried up—but not for lack of effort. We battled heavy trash in certain areas, our pouches filling with can slaw, pull tabs, and even the occasional World War II relic. What kept us going was the possibility of the next great find.
And there was still plenty to celebrate. Between the two of us, we recovered over $5 in silver coins, twelve silver rings, two silver necklaces, and more than fourteen pounds of loose change.
It was an incredible haul!
