Re: Drills.........let's see them

Here's two more of mine. These could possibly be Engravers, but I always figured they just little Punches or Drills. Both are from the same site. My father found the black one and I found the red one.

Re: Drills.........let's see them

GL, see the broken point, infront of the one you are referring to, well that point you are talking about started life that shape, its been reworked into a drill. I would definetly say its a drill, if you look at my post up top, you'll see one very much like it, could be a Kirk stemmed or Savanah river stemmed, hard to tell them apart. Nice find hon, gotta love those drills.

Re: Drills.........let's see them

MEinWV, like I posted on your other post about that piece, I really believe that is just a highly resharpened Pine Tree Point and not a Drill.

Re: Drills.........let's see them

OK Dorkfish, In order to further my understanding of drills and points, what are some clues that a particular item looks like one type but may actually be a type that has been reworked? The drill you show on the left side in the 5th pic looks very similar to mine, although mine has more of a tapered shoulder than yours(yours does have more of a drill shaped point). Could this be something to look at as a clue?

Thanks for the input! This is one of the best ways for us "noobs" to learn about these things.

Does your piece show any kind of use polish along the sides or the tip? That is usually a good sign that a piece has been used as a Drill. All of the pieces I have pictured do show use polish on at least the tips of them and most of them are polished along the entire length of the shaft.

Re: Drills.........let's see them

MEinWV, here an example I have of a point that is midiagnosed as a Drill by most people. The point on the left is a highly resharpened and almost exhausted Thebes point, but it is not a Drill. It shows no evidence whatsoever of ever being used as a Drill. There is no use polish on it at all and it was still used as a Knife at this stage since the blade edges are still sharp.

Re: Drills.........let's see them

WOW! Thanks for that info! I now understand more than I did before and it is really making sense. I just examined mine and it doesn't display the "use polish" that you described. The primary edges are still crisp and sharp and the rest of the chip facets are not showing signs of polishing as one should expect to see on a used drill. I must say that I am one happy camper now that you have added this tidbit of great info to my knowledge base. I guess it is probably just plain old common sense, but it never became obvious to me until now.

Again, Thanks for the help here!

Now I get to experience finding my first drill for the second time. LOL

Re: Drills.........let's see them

Hi Hunters
I know this Thread is for whole drills but, I just want to show ya'll two' Heartbreakers'. :'(
The first a Paddle drill, prolly started life as a blade? the material is beautiful, from the Kiomatoa River, Tx.( found on the same mound as my Cache River)
The second a Scotty, notice the Cortex of the stone, the outside 'Rinde' sometimes left on...
These would have been 'Gloaters' fer sure.

Re: Drills.........let's see them

The tip on this is worn smooth like a drill

This piece is filthy worn

Most of what I find in my area are microlithic drills, used extensively down here to drill shell and bone.
