Dry sand hunting.

I have a hankering to hunt the beach. But, it is soooo cold, I don't want to even get my big toe wet. I think I will charge up my Excalibur and have a go. Is it productive? I know most jewelery is found in the water.I am about a hour from the nearest beach.

Invest in a really thick warm pair of "waders"... the good thing about waders is you can dress super warm under them and not worry bout getting wet if you stay outta the waves.
OR if you wanna be UNDER the water... dry suit is the way to go in winter.

If I was close by I'd be out there everyday cold or not. A couple layers of warm clothing will make it bearable. Trust me once you get out there you'll forget all about the weather !!!!!!

Another thing about the waders ARRC mentioned, even if you don't go in the water they keep you nice and toasty warm, no wind penetration. But if you do go in the water with waders stay safe they will ahhhh how to say this, hummm step in a hole or an unexpected wave catch u, they fill up with water and u say bye bye.

Good heavens, I guess I can forget the waders. And the wet suit is out. This old 73 year old would never get in it, plus I don't want to dive even in the hot summer. Chicken, I guess. But, if I did not go deeper than my knees when the tide is out, the waders would be good if I can find them small enough. Maybe boys waders? I only wear size 5 shoe.

I wouldn't worry so much, get the waders. They are good for water below the knees, and especially help when you kneel down. A good tip might be to get waders that are a size or two too big, it allows for thick socks and ease in putting on or taking off.

Waders are fine for knee high water... just watch the waves, your feet still might get wet.

I've used hip waders and chest waders in the salt. Much prefer neither when I can, but this time of year, its chest waders or just stay in the dry sand.

Dry sand can be productive, but it does seem to get hit harder by other detectors. Once things freeze up solid, it becomes difficult to dig unless it is really dry. Around me in Ontario, there is a small window of opportunity at about this time of year after a good wind storm, to get onto the dry beach that has had the light sand moved away in places which exposes stuff that was deeper. I was out on Sunday, but the spot I was at was not wind swept. I should have taken my water gear. I found coins but no bling.

The State dune project is coming soon. Only holdup is Margate City they told Governor Fattie their town voted against it. He has threatened them with eminent domain. Anyway when that starts try to be out there when the Army Corp of Engineers start digging and pumping on the beach. There is the possibility of finding stuff we only dream about.

All ya need is one of those surplus web belts. Buckle that bad boy a bit snug around your chest and there ya go,, You are now your own "life preserver".
You WILL float and as long as no water seeps in,,, you will remain relatively dry and warm even if you do take a dunk.

Now get back out there gal,,,

Second tip... A good set of chest waders will come with a waist belt for just that purpose.

For sure, belting up waders can be a life saver.

I am surprised in this thread than nobody talks about gloves. If you are detecting in cold water, a good pair are a must-have. At this time of year, I usually have a 2 finger mitt on one hand and a thinner glove with the fingers on the other (so I can grab the goodies from the scoop). On my way out the door now for perhaps my last kick at the can this season.

Oh, that would be fun. But, how to find out when this will happen. Maybe I can check online somehow? I know they do screen what is pumped in, but how large the screen holes are, I do not know. And, are they going to replenish the dones or the beach?

Just got off the Wildwood NJ beach last weekend. I played in the dry to damp sand (didn't bring my waders). Found some clad, nothing eye popping. It was a nice way to test out my Sov XS since it came back from being repaired. Works like it should now. Bring on the spring (or any nice weather)!
