This year has gotten off to a slow start. I can only manage to detect on Sundays, and I usually end up at sites that have already
been hunted. I've basically been picking through what leftovers the other detectorists have left. One, maybe two silver dimes
a hunt, with a few Wheaties is all I've managed to get each time I go out.

Finally hit a site that looked virgin. New tear-down in an older part of town.
Dug a nice shaped 1944 Merc, then this little lady popped out of the ground. 1895-O, my first key date dime, and I didn't scratch it with my shovel!
Only thing I did was do a quick peroxide bath, and rinse with water.
Still has a smear of tarnish, but I'm not risking any more cleaning.

Paying for it today, while at the site, I discovered a cistern that had only been covered with clay.
One second solid earth, next second I'm crashing to the ground. Luckily not all of the top had collapsed with me,
which gave me enough time to maintain some balance. Very odd sensation, to say the least. Sore as hell, but it was worth it!

Beauty of a dime Carl. Nice to get a good year as well buddy

Congrats on the silver. Glad you didn't get hurt.

Wow, that's a serious Barber dime. It's actually in pretty good shape other than the black junk on it. Nice payday man

That is a good find!!!! You never know, there have been to sinkholes open up a few blocks away from me. I'm glad you will be out finding more!

Nice job on the key date barber....:occasion14:

Under 700k is a pretty low mintage. Congrats on the Barber

Congrats on that great find Carl. Glad to hear you have no serious injuries.

Good job Carl !!! Congrats on a sweet dime . if you weren't dancing I'm sure you were strutting ! Glad your safe on the cistern ,,, but if you had to be rescued ,,, would you have dropped enough bottles to actually grab the rope 8-)

Congratualtions on the key dime recovery! :occasion14:

Thanks everybody, just now being able to respond. Had work, and then a concert to go to.
Pumped about the condition of the coin, I've managed a few key dates in the past,
but they either came out of the ground toasted, or my favorite, a 1914-D penny that I tried to cut in half with my shovel.
I'm still smiling about partially falling through the cistern, luckily it was filled almost to the top. I would have had only a couple of feet drop.
Just the feeling of being in one location in time to another one a split second later was bizarre. Felt like I was in an old Warner Bros. cartoon.
Recently a bottle digger here in town fell through one, if he hadn't been with a buddy, it could have been real bad. About an 8 foot drop to some murky water.
There was a cistern exposed on the site, didn't think that there would be a second one on such a small property.
Thanks again everyone!
Carl
