Dug this copper today at an old park. Very deep like 10". All I did was run some water over it and I can't see much at all. Hoping someone with more experience in old copper can tell what it is. For all I know it's just trash.
At first I thought it was my 1st large cent because of the diameter.

I'd say King George I 1/2d. Like 1717 to 1724.

You beat me to it Gary..
Looks like 172?
KG1..

Yep, little doubt 1720s.

Holy crap I can sort of see the crown now and the horizontal line over the date. I'm shaking I'm so stoked. Might be a common find but regardless I'm way siked to have dug something that old.

Thanks very much for the id's all

What about a peroxide bath?

Great find!!!!! Someone will tell ya how to maybe get some detail! We have one still in olive oil for the past few months. Has made a great difference!!

Would hurt more than help, as would any other type of cleaning, because what you'd clean off is the exact thing that's creating the detail. 2x2 and happy!

Nice King George murray. Any old copper that can be identified is a great find.

By the way. Aint it a little wet to be digging? Youre hooked I guess

Congrats, not that common of a find.
And like Iron Patch said, nothing is going to help. At least you have a date and can tell what it is..

understood - thanks

What away to find your first large copper and break into the 1700's to boot. Awesome job

thanks all - i can't believe that someone in the 1700s had this in their hands

Congrats on the old copper. Shame that there is not much detail, but it counts none the less! Well played.

I believe the wet soil may have assisted in finding that old copper. How's it feel getting into the 1700's club? I'm still working on my membership.

Very nice way to brave the weather
