When this came out I thought it was a button but the back is completely smooth. It is solid brass and was found where I dug an early brass musket trigger guard as well as a 1747 Hibernia coin. Anybody seen anything like this?

I think your initial impression is correct. It looks like a button to me. The shank is broken off, and the back appear to say "STAND COLOR" and "BEST".

Definitely a button.

Definitely a button, early 19th century.

Nice going BUDDY :)
