I can't believe I dug another James shell and this one is different than my first two. This one is a type II and still has a large piece of sabot attached. I guess I can't electrolysis this without losing the white patina on the lead but I want to keep it intact. Any suggestions?

Also found some .69 cal. musket balls, canister shot, Sharps, .32 cal. Colt Navies, .58 cal. Minies and an eagle cuff button.

Were those things hand forged?

I'm not sure how these were made. I tried to research it but didn't find any explicit details on the manufacturing process.

I only asked because from what it looks like post electrolysis, I’d say they were hand forged. I hope an expert chimes in because I’m interested to know. Great find by the way!!

Nice saves. Great job with the cleaning. Congrats

How’s the electrolysis going on the shell?

So far so good. The sabot is slowing me down. It would be much easier without it but I want preserve it in place.

Day 7 or 8...I lost count but the shell is coming along nicely. Sabot still has a dark gray look to it, which is good.

Now that's a relic ! Great find.

All finished. I tried something new for the protective coating. Since I had to work around the attached sabot I tried a product called POR 15. It worked good and the finish matches my other 2 shells. The only downside is that it really highlights the amount of pitting from corrosion. The field this came from is very acidic and stays damp most of the year.
