Went detecting today with a fellow TNet hunter Wanye today for the first time. Make friends on TNet!!! It's better than hunting alone!!! High five Wayne.
We met at 6 AM in the pouring rain. We started off finding the typical shotgun shells, fishing weights, modern bullets and lots of CANS!
Well after the third site, lots of hills, both of us getting stung twice by dreaded yellow jackets, and at the very end of the hunt with only a few minutes left to go, I got a nice signal. Showed up as a 65 on my ATP.
About 5" down was this neat button with a chain. I did the happy dance as we had been at it almost 8 hours with no super finds.
It has two shanks intact and no markings on the back. It's got 13 stars. I am thinking war of 1812 as I have found an 1812'ish US Navy button nearby along with a 1817 large cent. Anyone?
High five again Wayne!

Looks old and beautiful that would Definitely make my day

Very cool, congratulations! It may be a section of a patriotic chain belt from the Victorian period. I have seen other members post similar items on TNet in the past. I know an expert will chime in soon for a positive ID for you. Sub 8-)

based on the style of the eagle, my guess is that it is pre- civil war militia. possibly part of a sword hanger

That button is plenty old and super neat .

Absolutely stunning!!!!!!! many more to you---------IB

Definitely different. Could be banner worthy. If you can, do some research and repost. Would get plenty of consideration I believe.

Thanks guys, I am being very optimistic but my mom thought it might be a cloak button, like Washington's in the pic if him crossing the Delaware...

im not sure what it is, but its very cool!
congrats

Where there buttons like this for our guys?, note the silver buttons connecting the jacket with the chain. That would be my guess as to what I found. Worn by someone important.

Whatever you have certainly looks old and like the other said, looks like a cloak piece. Way awesome.

very cool, haven't seen an eagle quite like that before!

Interesting finds! I can't do cans. On area farmer uses compost from the town - yard clippings and rubbish. It ruined the fields for any further detecting because of all the trash signals. :BangHead:

Hey Kris-

One heck of a banner fine! I have not idea what you unearthed I am kind of leaning that it may be part of War of 1812 since you dug a 1812 button in the same area. Regardless, it's old and glad I was able to share in your Happy dance ! :-)

Still doing the happy dance and somehow feel the need to touch it and play with it about once every few hours! CLOAK CLASP! Pure excellence, I am taking it to a civil war shop this afternoon to get the professional opinion and hopefully get a date range.

Fantastic find! Really nice patina on that, and it's in great shape to see the details.. Never have seen one with the chain like that. WTG! HH

Looking at it as a button I believe it is what would be considered as a Official /Diplomatic service type, it is right there with many examples of Albert's book for Diplomatic buttons, the stars, the style of the eagle, E Pluribus Unum, all are indicators of what a diplomat would wear, especially a cloak type, so makes sense when you put it with your suggestion of someone important might have worn it. Era, well that style could be from what I see 1850s+..... Excellent find!!
