Everything old from this site comes out of the ground in very poor condition.
Found some WWI buttons in good condition, anything older is crusty.
Found an Eagle I cuff button. Managed to scrap some crust off and saw shiny gold gilt
Out of the ground:

Soaked in ammonia for a while and toothpicked for an hour or two. More like 2, Didn't do much. This is how it looked.:

Kinda like taking a toothpick to a concrete sidewalk.
Made a concoction of this:

It may or not be safe, most likely not. but it's working.
Here's it is after a soaking and tooth brushing:

Gonna keep soaking and brushing. See if I can get it to parade grade.

Nice restoration job.

You have greatly improved the condition of that button! Nice work and congrats!!!

Nice work! Is the arthritis cool blue part of the mix or what you need after you are done scrubbing? Hahaha

Being over 150 years old, I figured the Eagle could use some Dr. Fred.

Hopefully you did some research prior to mixing all those chemicals!!
Be careful - different combination of chemicals can cause fires..burns...DEADLY gasses.

The button is fantastic.

Congrats on the nice restoration! :occasion14:

I know certain people highly recomend lemon juice for a task like that !
