Got out for 4 hours this weekend. Stayed local and hit some old cellar holes I have pounded with my new program.

Most interesting find was a high tone deep in a nail infested patch at my oldest site.

Got a couple IDs, one as a cane topper, the other a military saddle pommel.

This popped out with a button signal, bit of a mystery.

I either see a miner with a tool or a Polynesian with an umbrella by a palm tree.

Popped a really nice Buff iron “sifting” for shallow targets.

Here is the handful with a plethora of organ reeds in the same hole (they sound like silver dimes...)

And of course a spoon...

Nice assortment of finds pa-dirt_nc-sand. Thanks for sharing...

That eagle head is killer. Congrats!

I like the thought of it being a pommel from a saddle.

Thanks! The Buffs around here come out of the ground with a black crud coating over a copper patina. I’ve been using .999 pads to get them to the level that I like, not full shiny nickel, but not looking like a penny either. This one has nice details and strong date.

Thx Tom. I like the thought that this is a pre CW officers sword pommel, but will take a saddle pommel or even a cane topper. All I know for sure at this point is that it is old. Nothing from the 1900’s has popped out of this old site.

Thx. You never know what will pop out. This was a high tone (too strong) in the middle of the nail zone. Dug a hole, could not use a pinpointer because of all the iron. Walked away then swung over it again on my way out and still heard that too loud high tone (still thought it was probably a big piece of rusty iron), but took one more shovel full of dirt and the eagle landed. First one I have seen as well, fun part of this hobby is learning history first hand.
I cast my vote for saddle pommel.

There seem to be a number of varieties of eagle head saddle pommels. The one in this pic is from a site that has it as a 1830 militia officers saddle, other sites have pics of CW varieties, Dragoon, Cavalry.

Great relic hunting, congratulations! :occasion14:
