English Copper From The Woods ID'd As A William III 1695-99

Found this English Copper in the woods today. Though the date appears to be 1800s, I couldn't find an English Copper with the portrait facing right from that period. I'm hoping it's earlier. I was wondering if anybody knows what coin this is?

Hey Jeff, thanks for the quick ID. I had a feeling it could be a real early one. Thanks again, Bill

Re: English Copper From The Woods Today - Can Anyone Identify It?

I agree with the Id from Jeff :icon_thumleft: halfpenny from 1695, in the reign of King William III of England. The coin has the King’s portrait, facing right on the obverse and Britannia seated in her chariot on the reverse. Britannia appears to have generous breasts  , bare feet , a frond or feather , a spear, and a shield with the flags of England and Scotland superimposed. Nice 1600's coin find !!! Well done :headbang: 8) dawg

Awesome find Bill! I love to see good stuff from the Island (I grew up on the South Shore). Hope you don't mind - I darkened up your photo and also did a negative image - that last number is definitely a "2". Hard to make out the rest but the third number doesn't look like a "9" either - possibly an "8" ? Resolution on the last shot is bad but it was a small file. You can still make out the 2 though. Hope it helps buddy...

Not trying to second guess but William III were minted 1695 to 1701 . :icon_scratch:

I hear you CM. That last number just does not look like a 5 or a 7. I don't know exactly what it could be if not an "8" (for the third #). Sure looks like 16_2 and a stellar find regardless. Colonial all the way... :icon_sunny:

Yep DD-777 there are corrosion problems but the date line is 1695-99

Re: English Copper From The Woods ID'd As A William III 1695-99

quote from wikipedia

"The William III halfpenny appears with various distinct types of engraving of the king's head, Britannia, and the inscriptions, with the quality getting worse as the reign wore on. The coins were copper, weighing 8.9 to 11.5 grams, with a diameter of 28–29 millimetres. The king's effigy on the obverse faced right, with the inscription GVLIELMVS TERTIVS – William the Third. Britannia appears on the reverse with the inscription BRITANNIA and the date normally in the exergue beneath Britannia. Coins were produced each year between 1695 and 1701."

Hope this helps

It's the 3rd issue Circa. 1699-1701. The last digit is irrelevant if you can identify the 2nd, or 3rd, which seems to be the case here. So 1699 is the only possibility.
