Can someone point me to a group to help me start I live in Manchester England

Hello John. I find it just a little strange that you should be asking that question here and not on an English forum. There are numerous groups where you can get advice on UK detecting and even opportunities to go on organised digs. I'll give you just a starter for you to explore:

British Metal Detecting Forums - BMDF Index
Northern Relic Hunters
UK DETECTOR NET Forum ? Portal
