The Environmental Protection Agency said it would block construction of a controversial copper and gold mine in Alaska that has brought intense lobbying and congressional scrutiny in a move that industry officials say amounts to an illegal, "pre-emptive" action. The EPA said Friday that it would use its Clean Water Act authority to bar developers of the proposed Pebble Mine from obtaining a permit to build it in Bristol Bay in southwest Alaska. The agency said the mine would disturb Bristol Bay's vibrant sockeye salmon -- it hosts nearly half the world's population -- as well as native tribes and commercial fishermen.

Well it looks to me like the EPA is overstepping their authority yet again. The company trying to develop the mine has not even submitted a blueprint of the proposed operation and yet they say they're going to block it. Without a proper study of the blueprint, how can they make the claims that they're making?

It makes me wonder how much cash the people lobbying against the project have used to grease palms at the EPA. Everyone knows it's money that makes the policies in this country anymore, not science or sense.

Standard playbook. Use any and all means to limit access to resources. And always exert control over those resources.
A dependent people is a compliant people.
Like when all the beaches in NC (public) were shut down during the gov shutdown. They make it hurt for two reasons. They let people know the power they hold over you, and it coerces you into accepting further enslavement through income taxes on an ever ballooning debt.

What the NRA is to gun control, the PPL ought to become for responsible use of public lands. I'm going to join the PPL today. If you personally know any biologists, botanists, archeologists, geologists, civil engineers, and other professionals who are fed up with the tyranny being perpetrated on us by the Department of the Interior, EPA, NOAA, et al, please talk them into joining the PPL. The only people who will have any clout with courts and congress are the professionals who have credentials enough to argue against the tyrants.

It should be PLP (Public Lands for the People, instead of PPL.) Sorry about that.

Well I will look into that, thanks. As a chemist by profession working under Fed rules (FDA), I understand that bureaucracies tend to want to expand their scope of power. And with so many of the environmental rules, it is not so much about protecting the land from abuse, but protecting the land from use. Agenda 21 sums it up pretty well. I have several theories as to why so much land would be locked up and not used for resource extraction, but that is a topic for discussion on other boards.
I will look into the PLP!

Hmmm, a mine is under ground. This is going to effect water quality? Do people actually listen to themselves before they post?

Pebble Mine is an open pit mine. One of the largest in the country towards the end of its production cycle. This just means that the import metals can go up in cost now that we will have less production

I should ask you the same question. All copper mines are not underground. It remains to be seen whether the under ground mine proposed will affect water quality. With all of the government oversight involved in getting the permits to open a new mine, one would expect the EPA to at least wait for the company to file its plan, which would explain its methods of water, chemical, and leeching mitigation...if any were to be mitigated. The point is that the EPA protests everything, every time, using whatever creature available to thwart economic growth. In other words, the mining company should quit now, because the EPA will not sign off on a permit, no matter what. Does that sound just to you?

That is why the PLP is necessary. When the big mining concerns are thwarted by the government, what happens to guys like me who only want to run a small drywasher, sluice, or God forbid...a suction dredge? Again, the NRA is arguably the most powerful organization in the US for guarding our 2nd Amendment rights. I hope that the PLP becomes the same type of organization for miners. No self respecting miner wants to hurt the environment, but we are tired of losing our rights to mine public lands in the name of the "soup of the day" reason for prohibiting mining activities.

I wonder why they don't expend some of that energy in trying to find a solution to what is now killing the salmon, seals, walruses and polar bears. Fukushima radiation. West coast and Alaska are getting hit big time and they just ignore it.

Heh, speaking of copper mines, you should see the one we have here in Utah. Open pit 2.5 miles across and .6 of a mile deep. I'm sure they don't want to see that happen again.
