My mom was contacted by a realtor she knows because he sold a house that an elderly couple had owned and it needs to cleaned out by sept 14. The couple is in a nursing home, have no children. A niece is taking care of the estate but lives to far away to deal with it. My mom was asked to do the estate sale (she had owned a thrift store in town until she retired last year). She bought it outright and is in the process of sorting and pricing stuff. There is a lot of art work on the walls and some stacked in closets. This is one that was in the basement and looks very old. I was wondering if anyone has any info on the artist. It's large about 2'x3'. I believe it's signed auo ?????wards 190? I don't know if it's a print or watercolor. I will probably asking a lot of questions on artwork in the next week if anyone can help I'd appreciate anything! Thanks!

Sorry, the glass is still dirty..

Another item is this spur. Decorated on one side. Not signed. I know some can be very valuable. Any thoughts?

I think the first name is Otto.

Oops, I see Lost&Found beat me to it.

Last name is in my opinion Grifren( or m instead of n)vardt. What does everybody think? Beautiful scores! Congratulations!

P.S. Don't sell any of the artwork until you've researched it. Specifically the oil paintings and watercolors! You came to the right place for guidance! If I were you, I would take it all with me, and store it and spend a lot of time with it, researching, I mean! :-)

While I was researching, others replied that I missed! Thanks Gib & artslinger! I will talk to my mom about keeping the paintings for now. It looks like this one could be good. There are others that are better but I'm not sure if they are prints or paintings. Definitely worth researching them!

The sig definitely matches. Antique roadshow here we come! lol

The Otto piece looks like a print or engraving to me, it has that defined edge with border so the artist could sign the print. Hard to tell from photos but that is just my opinion.

PS sounds like a lot of fun! Never know what u might find.

Congrats on the artwork. The spur is a poorly made knockoff of the old style Mexican vaquero spurs. Worth what someone will give as a decorative item. Don't get near a horse with it.

I looks like the numbers on the art are 1907..(?)

That type of spur was for riding bulls.

Have fun sorting thru the rest.

I agree. I believe it is an etching.

I have several Mexican spurs that are almost identical...applied silver...

See them often in western US...

Probably common n the SW also...

This is one my mom took a couple photos of today. I wasn't there or I'd try to get a close up. She said she sees no signature on the front. She thinks it says "Chi daily news" and she thinks Joan of arc. Any ideas? It's large. Thanks again for any thoughts or info. Seriously appreciate it and all the great members here!

I had the same print that I gave to a friend as a gift because he admired it. I believe it's Tristan from the the story of Tristan & Isolde. I purchased it at the Salvation Army for $5 in 1985

Did you mom purchase absolutly everything from this estate?
If so check out the attic and under the house and the rafters in the garage.
Look for hiding spots.
If they had the money (remember, no kids) to invest in art they may have bought other things too.
Remember they could have hid cash anywhere, like behind the art work.

A friend of mine is an exterminator and he was up in the attic of a customers house and found a bag of jewelry under the fiberglass insulation. (The customer put it up there before a vacation and forgot all about it.) He took it down to the owner and they started talking treasure hunting. My buddy got the homeowner/customer interested in metal detecting. Now they are both in my MD club and have been for years.
