I went detecting yesterday and decided to switch it up and not hit my usual old fair grounds. So I chose to go to a rec field and hit a bank away from the soccer and ball fields. It was pouring rain and nobody was around so I had the place to myself. Well I start detecting and instantly find two wheat pennies so now I am thinking this has some potential. I ended up digging around ten wheats and only a couple of clads before deciding to leave. But before I left I said I would dig one more solid hit and wouldn't you know a 1937 merc. pops out. I was pumped when I left. So this morning it was raining all morning and the rain finally broke so I decided to go back to that field for an hour. When I pulled into the parking lot I was mortified all of my plugs from the day before were pulled out and dirt was strewn from each hole. So I got out of the truck and frantically replaced and fixed everything, and of course there were people around. I will end up heading back in the morning before work to re-check everything I just pray it is alright. Since it rained all night I really cant see what happened, but am guessing a skunk or something else was looking for worms/grubs. I did not make it out panning this week so no gold to show, but the two wheat pennies in the pic are both 1912.

Congrats on the merc and wheats and good for you on fixing the holes

Try cutting a rectangular plug. Cut three sides 90° to each other. Leave one side still attached. Pull back to remove dirt and target. Re-fill hole and tamp down "trap-door". This helps prevent killing the grass and makes it a little harder for critters to pull the plug back up as it fits a little more snugly.

I just hope I do not have to keep fixing them I live in a small town looks bad if it seen. I will go every morning before work if I need to! Who knows what happens after we leave an area.

Hey panner...nope..can't say I've had that happen...weird...and I cannot think what would cause that..but I do agree with the critter theory...you gave them easy access to some juicy grubs...yum yum..ddf

We had that happen one time in a local yard. It was a killer yard to boot with over 40 Indian Heads and a over a dozen silvers, some V and buffalo nickels and a pile of wheats. Lucky for us we got some rain which helped hide our holes. We figured it was critters looking for dinner.

I will do that thanks seated. Still new to this just got my detector this spring and am learning. Have spent more time researching history of areas then detecting. Just trying to hit older sites that do not get hit often. Tried a few old mid 1800 cellar holes this week and am having a rough time with the amount of "trash" around them. I still have not pulled a coin from cellar area or a silver quarter from anywhere yet.

Congrats on the Merc. I had the same thing happen last year at a school field I was hitting. Every day I went back and the animals had pulled all my plugs. I spent a good 15-30 minutes every day refilling the holes.

Must be a nh and vt thing
