Hello Everyone, I have a question about the threshold on my SE.

Sometimes in certain areas of a yard of a field when I am using my explorer SE, it seems to null out the background hum so I do not hear any threshold at all. This usually happens in small patches of ground. Settings are fast off deep on, sensitivity around 27 with the stock coil, & I am swinging the coil at a slow pace.

What in the ground is making it null out & what settings should I adjust 1st to get back the background hum?

Would switching to a smaller coil for this area make any difference? Thanks

I have this problem with the Explorer II as well. Still haven't figured out how to fix it.

What is happening is maybe the iron mask is just nulling out the iron. Are you a new SE user? Minelabs don't act like other detectors. A smaller coil would help you get around the junk iron to locate any better targets if any are there.

Yes, have been using it for 4 months, prior dfx & xlt user...

sandman is right. what you are hearing with the nulling out of the threshold is a target that the machine is discriminating. one thing you can do is to run the machine wide open, with no discrim and pick out the good signals from the iron signals manually. this method is very noisey and takes some getting used to but it can be helpful in finding good stuff thats hiding next to trash. i would imagine what is making it null out are iron bits.

Thank You for the info, All Metal Mode coming up...

Turn your sensitivity down, you are running over highly mineralised ground and the machine is blanking it out. By turning your sensitivity down you will not lose any depth, in some cases you might even get more depth because the coil is not being overwhelmed with false signals.Try running your machine on manual sensitivity, this will also quiet down the machine and give you more depth. good luck seeya Neilo

Sandman is correct....also you will null out over a target the machine is not sure what to do with.
Thats means the machine is not sure where it falls so instaed of giving a signal it nulls out.
All the explorer machines do this. Even with a smaller coil i sometimes have it go silent on me.

Thanks Neilo & Teverly, I tried the all metal mode in conduct & ferrous this past weekend to see the difference. I think for now, I need to use a little discrimination in conduct mode since a lot of the iron signals are sounding similar to coins & my ear is not fully trained yet to distinguish the two, ferrous was easier to distinguish in all metal mode but I am not sure which one I prefer right now since I hear that iron next to a coin in conduct mode is a little easier to distinguish than hunting in ferrous.

I did pull an Indian out of a park last week using the WOT coil for the 1st time & all metal mode, it is a little corroded & is soaking right now.

This is a real fun machine & can't wait to get some more time under my belt...

I'm not really up to you big fellows yet because I'm still using the Sovereign GT.

But what you're writing here I've seen even with the GT. Like stated, it nulls out on most iron even if the discrimination is set to it's lowest setting. Minelabs hate iron when in discriminate mode.

With the baby SE (GT), almost all decent targets are easy to ID. I dug maybe 2000 targets with my GT and every single good target got a nice unmoving signal from at least 2 directions. All coins and rings were simple to pinpoint. All large pieces of iron caused me to struggle with should I dig or should I pass it up.

To this time every single target I've had trouble pinpointing and that didn't give a clear positive signal from 2 sweep directions turned out to be trash.

Thats some great info coming from a seasoned treasure hunter which I can use on a daily basis, thanks for the tip...

Jersey Don You mention using the Wot coil remember bigger coils are more sensitive and more prone to falsing especially at higher settings. Also try raising and lowering your coil on one spot and see whether you get excessive false signals,if so reduce your sensitivity.Make sure you swing the bigger coils in an even sweep at constant height from the ground not lifting the coil at the ends of your sweep. If you do lift it at the end of your sweep you can be plagued with false signals especially in highly mineralised ground or high salt conditions eg waters edge at beach, where the machine is trying to keep up with ground balance. seeya Neilo
