I am a top rated seller, and I wouldn't mind getting to top rated plus. HOWEVER, I am NOT going to offer extended returns. What is to stop a buyer from renting a gorgeous piece of jewelry and then I'm stuck with it in Jan when no one wants to buy expensive jewelry cuz they are all tapped out from all the holiday shopping? All they have to do is buy it, wear it, enjoy it, and then send it back.

Don't forget bent, broken, missing stones or just a piece of lead returned. I enjoyed TRS status and lost too much money just giving full refunds to the scammers that didn't want to return the items but #$%@ and moaned or demanded that I pay for a return, then not sending the item back. No more, the savings and B.S. is not worth it. I can go buy my own cute little gold stars from kindergarten teachers for a penny per dozen.

Yeah, I may offer 14 day on a few things in the near future, but I am not doing anything over the holidays.

I am scratching my head with the holiday returns too.

Okay, I understand why ebay wants to push us to offer this program, but for most items, I am really not interested.

This will cost ebay some money. My plan was to buy Lionel trains all summer, and flip them on ebay this winter. In essence, someone can 'rent' a 75 year old train from me, run it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from 11/1/2014 until 1/31/2015, and return it for a full refund. Those old engines are finicky, and there is no way I am going to take a return because the e-unit flaked out after 89 days.

And they want me to refund the full price, plus the original shipping??

No thanks.

I can't find where you lose your status if you don't offer them. I think maybe you just won't get the discount on the items you don't offer them on.

I got an email saying that you need to offer extended refunds if you want to be a top rated seller plus. I am just a top rated seller right now. I like the tiny bit of money I save. I just don't see how this is good for anyone!

My friend used to sell matching family pajamas. the kind you wear on xmas moring when you all gather around the tree and take pictures. She told me time and time again people would order the clothes, and then send it back, and she knew they were worn. they were used for a photo shoot, basically, rented.

I have a few big ticket items I am saving for the holiday season. One is a pair of $1500 earrings. I can afford to hold onto the money for 2 months waiting to see if the buyer is going to decide to return or not.

As stated above, it isn't just jewelry and clothes. Now we see it's toys too.

I think that reads scarier then it is in reality. I have a shop and 5 booths at antique stores and I get tons more returns on these compared to eBay. I also think keeping top rated seller can be important if you sell a decent volume it can mean real savings. If you have an internet presence you need to make sure the buyer feels comfortable and that he is not going to be taken and taking returns is part of that equation.

As sellers we need to be sure to factor in shrinkage, theft and lost merchandise to our asking prices to cover these losses.

Sounds like you "get it".

I said my peace in the last thread about this the other day. http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/all-things-ebay/427453-below-seller-standards.html#post4131976

The "90 day return policy" is only during the Christmas holiday season. It was the same last year and it didn't hurt me any. Other than that it's a 14 day return rule for top rated plus sellers. eBay Seller Information Center: 2014 Spring Seller Update: Holiday returns

  • With the new extended holiday return policy, you give buyers until January 31 to return any item purchased between November 1 and December 31.
  • You can choose to add a holiday return policy to all or just some of your existing listings and add it when you list. The January 31 return date will be displayed automatically to buyers only during the months of November and December.
  • The holiday returns option will be available to all sellers in September, in time to update your listings before the peak selling season.
  • The extended holiday return option will be required for any listing to qualify forTop Rated Plusbenefits from November 1 through December 31.

PS- I lost my top rated plus status for one 3 month period because I was busy at my regular job and didn't get 90% of my packages shipped within 1 business day. I got my top rated plus status back the very next evaluation period and still have it.

As an eBay Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
I'm not going to be top rated plus. I'll keep just plain old top rated.

For the longest time, I have thought that the program was not a good idea, but maybe should only apply to brand new items in their original packaging. If you buy your nephew a new Lego set, and then learn that he wanted a Lionel train car instead, it would be easy to return the Lego set.

On second thought, why should a buyer be able to purchase something from me on November 1, and tie up my new merchandise until January 30? There are some items that really will only sell around Christmas time, and if you lose that market and time period, those items might sit for another year before someone buys them again.

I tell ya, I am pretty sure that I am going to pull all of my 'good' listings for the month of November, and maybe part way into December, too. No way is someone going to have 90 days to rent and play with my 75 year old Lionel engines, and then return it because the smoke unit burned up.

I'll leave up all of the listings that I can afford to lose, but the good stuff is going to be pulled on October 31.

Ebay thinks they are going to get more revenue with increased sales, but they are going to lose listings from me.
