Face Book to get permissions...

I've been using Facebook to drum up interest in relics and get more permissions. For the last year I've had a ton of likes on my posts but NO interest in "What's hiding in your yard". I made another post today showcasing my latest 1785-1800 button find and had two hits today. Two homeowners interested in having me come out to search their property. One property is an old farmhouse with yet and older farmhouse next door. Maybe Facebook will work out after all! Maybe what helped this time was showcasing an actual find?

Most of my permissions are township owned open space lands that I was able to get through work. I deal with them on a daily basis so I know the people that could give permission. One of the townships has a historical commission which has made me their official relic hunter. They're going to send out letters later this year to residents that own historic homes and farms asking for permission for me to search. Right now, they're working to get permission for the oldest church in the township.

I'm not really big on knocking on doors. Not too fond of it when it happens to me. I got a couple field permissions by sending out letters. I thought if folks were interested, they could contact me.

I like the farmyards, yeah, I find a lot of trash but there are some good things too.

When knocking on doors I found that if I take my wife with me I rarely get turned down. 😉

Just make sure you set some ground rules. I've had so many people ask me to detect their properties, but they want to keep everything I find! Not gonna happen. No point detecting if I don't get a little bit out of it.

Yep, it will save you any hard feelings. When I used to hunt yards in the city, I’d tell them coins are mine, any jewelry is theirs. Personal items theirs and they can keep any junk relics they want. I think putting coins against jewelry is a fair trade off. Now I’m in the country hunting long gone farms and I get to keep it all. Unfortunately I don’t find coins or jewelry!

I see it differently. I love the hunt. I'm happy just finding the relics and having the photos. One of the homeowners that contacted me is really into learning the history of their home. If they want to keep everything to display, that's fine with me. I have those little divided plastic cases all over my garage with things I've found. I am storing everything I've found for the Historical Commission in my garage till the school interior is finished. Where it will all be displayed.

The only items I display in my home are the items found in my yard. I rarely look at the actual relics I've found. I look at the photographs more. If I keep half of what I find, I'll run out of room. Fortunately, I can get rid of the trash at work.

One is a author that owns the school and the church.
She wanted every recovery, and wanted to watch me dig every signal.
(I put her on the list of places I would be not detecting)

The other person has a 250 acre farm. Leases out the fields to one of my other permissions.
He told meiof every possible site that he knew of, plus he stated that I should keep everything I dig.
If I need information on another property that predates the historical maps, he's the brain to provide the best information.

I would bet that after the first hour of you digging every signal, she'd be bored of that and go find something else to do.
